Google Introduces Free Phone Call Service via Gmail

On Wednessday Google introduced its free phone call service within its Gmail service. Currently calling to any United States and Canada landline or mobile/cell number is absolutely free and for other countries the rates are at the lowest.

How low ? well, real low here's an example - If you are using a conventional voice-over-Internet-Protocol calling plan or Skype Call service a call to Argentina - Buenos Aires per min would cost you $ 0.21 where as the same call via Google costs $0.02. You can see the whole comparision chart at skype and the call rates from Google.

Rates from Skype Vs Rates from Google (or the detailed rate list)

If you have a Google Voice account, the other person will see that number in their caller ID. You can also answer their calls from within Gmail; an incoming call will generate an alert in the bottom right corner of the Gmail window, which you can click to answer.

If you don't have a Voice account, the other party will see a special number Google has set up, 760-705-8888. Calls to that yield a message advertising the new Gmail feature.

So go ahead and try the free phone calling option from Goolge and do share your views below

Indian Government may ban Gmail in India

Indian Government may ban Gmail in India... Unbelievable ? but it might happen if Gmail does not agree to make data going through their networks available to the Indian security agencies in a readable format. The data services being offered by companies like Gmail and Skype are highly encrypted because of which Indian security agencies are finding it difficult to keep a watch over the content being transmitted through them.

The Government has also decided to amend the IT laws would force companies such as Skype to give complete access to their networks or set up a local server in India to allow security agencies to track content.

After China-made telecommunication equipment, after bringing the satellite-based mobile communication services under tighter security norms, it probably time for internet.

O Caso do Google e o Debate Sobre Liberdade

Qual o próximo passo do Google?

Microsoft e News Corp negociam aliança contra Google

Deixo a minha opinião no post acima.

Google brings the Earth right in your palm

Google recently has released a custom Google Earth application for the Apple's iPhone/iPod Touch, and it's really exciting. Google described this as achieving the dream of "being able to carry the Earth around in your pocket".

The app is free and available today in all languages the iPhone currently supports (18) and will gradually be released for 22 countries in total

The application offers users easy access to the world of Google Earth on the go. By incorporating the functionality of the iPhone and the 3D imagery of Google Earth, it gives users the ability to move from one location to the other with the swipe of a finger, tilt the screen to change the view, and tap to zoom in and out.

Google has also added additional layers to the application, namely Panoramio and Wikipedia, for geo-located high-quality photos and informative articles respectively.

Google has also added a "search near me" feature giving users the ability to find businesses in close proximity to their current location without having to find it on the map first.

Here's the Product Manager of Google Earth Peter Birch, who is demonstrating the app in the video below

A quick review of the Google's browser - Chrome

Today most of what we do on web is not just surf website, we execuate web applications like a Gmail or using Google reader. This next generation of web applications calls for a next generation web browser and what better could it be when the big daddy of internet releases its own browser. Yes we are referring to Google's own web browser Chrome.

As per Google they wanted to build a new browser from scratch, designed specifically to be used with all the new generation of Web applications. Google designed Chrome to be more stable than other browsers, chrome is designed to be faster than the competition, particularly in JavaScript performance. Google designed Chrome to be multithreaded.

Google's browser is based on the WebKit rendering engine that underlies Safari. It runs only on Windows for now. Mac and Linux versions are in development.

To fight malware and phishing attempts, Chrome is constantly downloading lists of harmful sites. Google also promises that whatever runs in a tab is sandboxed so that it won’t affect your machine and can be safely closed. The browser has an address bar with auto-completion features. Called ’omnibox’, Google says it offers search suggestions, top pages you’ve visited, pages you didn’t visit but which are popular and more.

Here is a quick video of 10 Features of Google Chrome

Here's another video on the official Google Chrome announcement dated September 2nd 2008.

More options than just a "Google"

Google continues its race to become the biggest brand of the century, infact its almost reached there. For millions of Netizens, the G company has already become synonymous with God. According to a recent survey, the Internet company has managed to upstage established brands and behemoths such as Coca Cola and Microsoft to claim the No. 1 spot as global top brand.

I believe that Google would remain to be at the forefront because of a simple reason that Google’s product works, which is why most people don’t feel a need to switch to other search options. However, this leader face tough competition from local favourites in several countries. Baidu is known as a Google trouncer in China, Google has just been dethroned by Wretch in Taiwan.

Some search specialists will argue that rivals such as Yahoo! and Ask deliver better results. Nonetheless, Google delivers a satisfactory service for most mainstream users so surfers don't feel the need to switch.

Have you lately tried other search engine sites? Well here is an opportunity to actually check which is the best search engine site? Put all the top search engine to test.

Go to http://gofind.50webs.com a single window multi search engine site where you can check the search results from multiple search engine sites. Give it a try!! and maybe Gofind becomes your favorite!!

Google moves closer to home entertainment market

Google is all set to bridge the gap between Google and your TV. It recently released a new gadget for Google Desktop called Google Media Server allows you to take content found on your computer or any of the online Google services like YouTube and Picasa Web Albums and shares it with UPnP compatible devices like the PS3.

It uses Google Desktop technology such as Desktop gadgets for the administration tool and Google Desktop Search to locate media files. All you need is a PC running Google Desktop and a UPnP-enabled device (e.g. a PlayStation 3).

With this release Google moves closer to an area of the home entertainment market coveted by Microsoft and Apple.

Both companies have software within their respective operating systems for connecting a Windows Vista PC and Mac, respectively, to a TV. More details on the Google Media Server can be found here.

Google helps website owners make their site social

Google Inc. in an effort to make the web more social has introduced a new tool to enable people to interact with their friends. Using the tool website owners will be able to use the hosted application to allow interactions with visitors from social-networking sites such as Facebook and Orkut, by copying and pasting snippets of code into their site.

Google's initiative, called "Friend Connect," follows path of MySpace and Facebook last week to allow their users to transport their personal profiles and applications to other web sites. Friend Connect-compliant sites will be able to view, invite, and interact with newfound friends, or with existing friends, from established social-networking sites, including Facebook, Google Talk, Hi5, Orkut, and Plaxo via secure authorization application-programming interfaces.

Here is a video explaining Google's Friend Connect.

Friend Connect provides wizardlike pages. Webmasters just fill in the information, select social apps, copy code, paste, and save. No coding is required. It passes the 'easy' test, and it does something useful.

Google hopes its latest social tools will encourage people to spend even more time online, giving the company more opportunities to show the advertising that generates most of its profits.

Google's killer API has been released

Google's killer API is here.. officially its launched. This API could go ahead to become the most in demand tool for thousands of third party websites. So whats so appealingly about this API ?

Well this API will enable trusted 3rd party sites to access your Google contact information without asking you to provide your login information. Have you ever been on a web-site that asked you for your Google username and password so that it can import your Gmail contact list? Did you think twice before giving out that information there.. hmm thats what millions of people online have thought to themselves "why is this new site I'm on asking me for my Gmail username and password? When will there be a secure API for me to pass those contacts along without giving up my password?" So here it is.

So next time Facebook, Plaxo, or another service wants to import your Gmail, Google Calendar, or Google Talk contacts you might not have to give up your email password. The API uses the Google Data protocol which is based on AtomPub (the same standard that Microsoft is now adopting). All contacts feeds are private and apps can use either the Google Client Authentication API or the Google Web Auth API for authenticating.

So now developers can now write an application that will allow you to synchronize your Outlook and Google contacts. The Contacts API allows developers to create, read, update, and delete contacts using the Google Data protocol, based on AtomPub

How to set invisible mode in Gmail Chat

Yahoo chat has it, AIM has it and most other common internet messenger softwares has it, i am referring to the invisible mode available on these application.

GTalk as of now does not have an invisible mode option, however in an recent update to Gmail they have added this feature to GMail chat. But it won’t work if you are logged in simultaneously with Google Talk. So now you can be offline but also chat with friends who are online, completely invisible.

Also setting up your invisible mode in Gmail chat is also very simple, refer the adjoining image here, use the invisible option now available under the 'set status here' option.

Google Talk does not allow users to decide when their status changes to 'idle' and back. The result is that others can easily know whether or not you're at your computer. however there are some free softwares that can assist you to take control of your GTalk status.

Try gAlwaysIdle, it adds two new options to Google Talk, allowing you to change your status to be 'always idle' or 'never idle'. When your status is set to 'always idle', you'll appear idle to your Google Talk buddies, even if you're sitting at your computer typing e-mails and sending IMs. The software is freely available here..

Posible options for Yahoo to avoid Microsoft

In midst of the $45 billion (£23 billion) hostile bid from Microsoft, Yahoo is looking for all possible options. Yahoo is most likely to turn down the Microsoft Corp’s 44.6 billion takeover offer as reported by San Francisco Chronicle. So what are the options for Yahoo?

Well, one option being explored is to restart merger talks with AOL - the online business owned by Time Warner group. Although Yahoo! and AOL previously failed to join forces because of differences over price, but with Microsoft eying Yahoo this could be the right time to look for an AOL alliance. On the other hand tie-ups with groups such as Google or Disney are also being considered by the yahoo board.

A partnership with Google may allow Yahoo to outsource its search service, shedding the costs of running its own search engine and sharing ad revenue with its larger rival.

In my opinion, the Microsoft-Yahoo deal has its pros and cons.
Google doesn’t want this Microsoft-Yahoo alliance to go through for sure as Microsoft and Yahoo together equals the majority of instant messaging and email accounts – so coming together they will have like a monopoly over the email, IM and web services. But on the other hand Google does carry an unhealthy dominance in online advertising and web searching – so we need a competition there for sure which this alliance will bring about.

One thing is clear: Yahoo is running out of time, and will need to decide whether it will accept Microsoft’s bid or try to partner with Google or AOL soon. Yahoo’s annual shareholders meeting is in May 2008 and a decision needs to be made before that.

Friends do post in your view/ comments on this deal and its impact.
