Google Introduces Free Phone Call Service via Gmail

On Wednessday Google introduced its free phone call service within its Gmail service. Currently calling to any United States and Canada landline or mobile/cell number is absolutely free and for other countries the rates are at the lowest.

How low ? well, real low here's an example - If you are using a conventional voice-over-Internet-Protocol calling plan or Skype Call service a call to Argentina - Buenos Aires per min would cost you $ 0.21 where as the same call via Google costs $0.02. You can see the whole comparision chart at skype and the call rates from Google.

Rates from Skype Vs Rates from Google (or the detailed rate list)

If you have a Google Voice account, the other person will see that number in their caller ID. You can also answer their calls from within Gmail; an incoming call will generate an alert in the bottom right corner of the Gmail window, which you can click to answer.

If you don't have a Voice account, the other party will see a special number Google has set up, 760-705-8888. Calls to that yield a message advertising the new Gmail feature.

So go ahead and try the free phone calling option from Goolge and do share your views below

Could 'Google Me' be a 'Facebook Killer'

Facebook the social networking giant could very soon face some real threat from the internet giant Google. Google is planning to create a super social networking site by combining Orkut, Google Buzz & Google Profiles. The service code named as 'Google Me' is aimed to take on Facebook headon.

Google is in various stages of talks with the various vendors and companies like Playdom, Electronic Arts' Playfish, and Zynga Game Network, these are the vendors of the Facebook hit Farmville. Google recently also took a financial stake in Zynga.

In one of the recent statement Eric Schmidt said "The world doesn’t need a copy of the same thing." So woud Google Me be something different ? Could 'Google Me' take on Facebook which already has more than 500 million active users as of July 2010. Well only time will tell.

Your Office Photocopy machine could be a digital time bomb

Have you ever used your office photo copy machine to scan important personal document? like your credit card, income tax papers, social security document, medical records, bank records etc. If the answer is yes then you have a potential threat of these critical data to be stolen.

Did you know most of the digital copier built after 2002 has a build in hard drive and it stores an image of every documents copied, scanned or emailed by the machine on the copier's hard drive. This makes any office copy machine packed with highly-personal or sensitive data and a potential digital time-bomb.

Over a period of time most of the office copier machine are sold out to third party vendors and if somebody is in a identity theft business it seems this machine would be a pot of gold. Retrieving images and data from the copier's hard drive is a very simple process.

Check out this investigative video. This would be surprising and this could be an eye-opener

Advanced technology has opened a dangerous hole in data security, specific precautions can help to minimize risk. The first step could be sharing this awareness.

Also get your office IT dept. to periodically clean the copier's hard drive data.

Now run your web apps on Google's infrastructure

Google App Engine is an application-hosting tool that any developers can use to build scalable web apps on top of Google’s infrastructure. The goal of Google is to make it easier for the web developers to build and scale applications, instead of focusing on system administration and maintenance.

For developers provisioning and configuring multiple machines for web serving and data storage is an expensive and time consuming excercise. Google App Engine helps to deploy web applications by dynamically providing computing resources as they are needed. Developers write the code and deply rest is taken care by Google App Engine.

Sudden increase in web traffic can be overwhelming for applications of all sizes, so Google App Engine can take care of the surge in web traffic when the web app gain popularity. Google App Engine makes it easier to scale from one user to one million by taking advantage of Bigtable and other components of Google’s scalable infrastructure.

Easily integrate with other Google services is an added advantage for developers. It’s unnecessary and inefficient for developers to write components like authentication and e-mail from scratch for each new application. Developers using Google App Engine can make use of built-in components and Google’s broader library of APIs that provide plug-and-play functionality for simple but important features.

Some limitations as well.. As of now only the first 10,000 developers to sign up for the beta will be allowed to deploy applications. Secondly the service is completely free during the beta period, but there are ceilings on usage. Applications cannot use more than 500 MB of total storage, 200 million megacycles/day CPU time, and 10 GB bandwidth (both ways) per day.

Google Street View - the end of privacy ?

Google Street View is an application that allows one to take a virtual walk along the streetsides of various places on the earth.It provides a 360 degree perspective from the point of view of a pedestrian at that point.

Hundreds of people have already complained about the service that allows users to view millions of photographs of homes, people and cars, in 25 cities and towns. Although Google obscures faces and numberplates, critics say it is voyeuristic and has become a tool for burglars.

How is it done ?
Google Street View displays photos taken from a fleet of specially designed cars/bikes mounted with 9 directional cameras for the 360° views, GPS units for positioning, Laser Range Finders for the measuring of buildings and 3G/Wi-Fi aerials for whereabouts on 3G and Wi-Fi hotspots.

Recent Updates on Google Street View.
On March 18, 2009, United Kingdom and Netherlands images were added.As of March 2009 the Google Street View camera car was also seen roaming the streets of Taipei, Taiwan.

Future Plans of Google.
In the more immediate future, Google plans to release Street View for various Canadian cities, but modified so that faces and license plates are blurred, due to concerns raised by Canada's federal privacy commissioner.

A most dangerous computer virus to strick on 1st of April

No, its not an April fools day build-up but a real big threat to thousands of computers around the globe.

A new sleeper virus that could allow hackers to steal financial and personal information has now spread to more than eight million computers already. Its said to be one of the most serious security threat that time has ever seen. Its Known as the 'Conficker/Downadup'.

It's so bad, Microsoft has a running $250,000 bounty for the author, dead or alive. An extraordinary behind-the-scenes struggle is taking place between computer security groups around the world and the brazen author of a malicious software program

What exactly is it and What does it do ?
Conficker, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, is a computer worm that surfaced in October 2008 and targets the Microsoft Windows operating system. Upon infection, the worm saves a copy of its DLL form to a random file name in the Windows system folder, then arranges to load thereafter itself at boot as a system service with a randomly-generated name.

The worm launches a brute force dictionary attack against stored administrator account passwords to help it spread through admins' shares.

How can I prevent it infecting my machine ?
The best way is to get the patch and install it company-wide. The second way is password security. Use long, difficult passwords -- particularly for administrators who cannot afford to be locked out of the machines they will have to fix.

If you are on a network or have a full-time connection to the Internet, such as a DSL or cable modem, disconnect the computer from the network and Internet. Disable or password-protect file sharing, or set the shared files to Read Only, before reconnecting the computers to the network or to the Internet. Because this worm spreads by using shared folders on networked computers.

Why did China Ban Youtube ?

In most of China, YouTube has suddenly become inaccessible from 23rd March. Google has confirmed that YouTube once again is down in China, apparently a victim of Chinese censorship. China has a history of blocking websites which carry messages it views as politically unacceptable.

Some speculate that Chinese officials could be upset about footage of Chinese soldiers beating Tibetans appearing on the YouTube site.

Another possible reason for the blockade is the US Navy's recent release of videos depicting five Chinese ships apparently trying to snag a Sonar array cable trailing behind the USNS Impeccable, which appeared on YouTube.

China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) indicate that approximately 253 million people across China have access to the Internet re-enfourcing its internet supremacy.

The Chinese government in January began a crackdown of what the government calls “vulgar” websites. Under the crackdown, 91 sites were blocked in just three days. China warned Google and Chinese search engine Baidu that they needed to do more to censor “inappropriate content.”

Whats your take on this censorship statergy of China? do post in your views and thoughts below.

Tips: Here are some easy hacks to access YouTube from China.

Google helps website owners make their site social

Google Inc. in an effort to make the web more social has introduced a new tool to enable people to interact with their friends. Using the tool website owners will be able to use the hosted application to allow interactions with visitors from social-networking sites such as Facebook and Orkut, by copying and pasting snippets of code into their site.

Google's initiative, called "Friend Connect," follows path of MySpace and Facebook last week to allow their users to transport their personal profiles and applications to other web sites. Friend Connect-compliant sites will be able to view, invite, and interact with newfound friends, or with existing friends, from established social-networking sites, including Facebook, Google Talk, Hi5, Orkut, and Plaxo via secure authorization application-programming interfaces.

Here is a video explaining Google's Friend Connect.

Friend Connect provides wizardlike pages. Webmasters just fill in the information, select social apps, copy code, paste, and save. No coding is required. It passes the 'easy' test, and it does something useful.

Google hopes its latest social tools will encourage people to spend even more time online, giving the company more opportunities to show the advertising that generates most of its profits.

Communicate with your Facebook friends without accessing internet

In todays times staying in touch with friends is very simple, either via various social networking websites or via any internet messenger. However the prerequisite is, you and your friend both need access to internet to be online and communicate via services provided on internet. Well, not exactly..anymore.. the later part "require access to internet" is gonna be a thing of the past.

A newly released application does the trick. Its called the Peersonalizer. With this application along with a downloadable software called WiPeer, you can detect Facebook friends and their friends in the vicinity if they have also installed the application. Researchers at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology have come up with this application that makes it possible to chat with friends without accessing internet.

WiPeer and Peersonalizer not only allows friends to chat but also share files and directories and play collaborative games. WiPeer can make direct wireless (WiFi) connection between computers within a range of roughly 300 meters without using any intermediary device like a router. However the limitation is that WiPeer currently works with Windows XP only.

Peersonalizer uses technology that can also be applied to other social networking sites such as Orkut, MySpace, Friendster and LinkedIn.

To use this application, you need to download the WiPeer application,
available for free from here

Welcome to the future - Grid Computing

Grid computing provides a way of sharing computer resources such as processing and storage capacity for solving massive computational problems. The resources may include a dedicated cluster in an organization's computer room, an unmanaged cluster of workstations in the next building, or potentially a home PC on the other side of the world.

Grid computing is the next evolution of enterprise technology architectures, and will furthermore revolutionize how businesses think about and manage their computing resources. More so than client/server or Internet computing, the technology will be more of a revolution in computing architectures and could spark a revival of the entire technology industry.

Perhaps a more accurate way to look at grid computing is to visualise all the systems in an enterprise working together to create a powerful virtual mainframe, giving an organisation unprecedented access and control over computing and data resources, not only within the network but also across the enterprise. The grid virtualises the underlying technology, so the user essentially sees one large computer.

Watch grid computing introduction video.

Imagine being able to cut the processing time of your physics experiments, or the calculation time of your mathematical simulations from days to just seconds.

Royal Dutch Shell created a grid infrastructure for its seismic interpretation applications that cuts the time needed to process seismic data while improving the quality of the data, thus allowing the company’s employees to focus upon key problems.

A short video describing the advantages that Grid computing can generate for businesses.

What problems can be solved using Grid Computing?

* clinical trial modelling
* nuclear engineering
* transport predictions
* financial hedging models
* climate prediction
* oil reservoir data analysis
* environmental modelling
* protein folding
* data mining of operational information
* and other complex simulations and analysis..

Grid computing is real, and it’s here today.

Blu-ray has won the high-definition format war against HD

Both formats, released in 2006, were backed by two projects from companies such as Toshiba and NEC Corporation of America for the HD DVD format along with Sony and Phillips for the Blu-ray format. Last month, Toshiba announced it was pulling the plug on its high-definition video disc format, HD DVD. Within days, Toshiba's partners announced that they were now Blu-ray shops.

However HD DVDs were more compatible with regular DVDs. They used the same file systems as regular DVDs and could be produced by manufacturers with the same equipment used to make regular DVDs. Blu-ray discs didn't and couldn't.

Two of the most likely scenarios that lead to Blu-ray winning the format war would be the Sony Playstation 3 and Warner Brothers, the largest distributor of DVDs, dropping the HD DVD format and then Wal-Mart announced that it would start phasing out HD DVD completely by June 2008.

In the beginning HD DVD players ranged from $499-$799, while the Blu-ray players were anywhere from $500-1,500. Eventually movie buffs could purchase a combo player in 2007 for $1,199. So one could say Blu-ray battled HD DVD to the death to win the high-def format war

A quick review on the new features of Mozilla Firefox 3

The much anticipated release of Mozilla Firefox 3 is through. I managed to get my hands on this beta 3 version and here is my quick review on whats new in this latest version of Firefox.

1. New Download Manager: Firefox 3 now has a new download manager add-on that displays where the downloaded files coming from.

2. Auto-complete feature: While typing in letters or a website URL in the address bar, a pull down menu displays URLs with the favicon next to it. By clicking on it directs the user to the website URL. This speeds up navigation using the browser itself.

3. Bookmarking Button: This feature is similar to the Internet Explorer 7.0. By clicking on the star once saves it as a bookmark and a second click actually allows users to file and tag the bookmarks.

4. Malware Protection: A new Malware feature displays a warning when entering a web site that is known for intalling viruses, spyware, and malware. So this would be beneficial if you are fond of surfing new websites.

5. Single click website details: When clicking on the favicon next to the website URL on the address bar, Firefox 3 relocates users to see who owns the particular website.

6. Speed: The speed is faster. Firefox uses Cairo, an API that advances 2D drawing load-time.

To download the Windows version click here

More info could be found at the official release note here.

In the coming days one can expect Mozilla to develop in the Internet messaging area as well as in the web browsing side. So very soon one can expect to hear about Thunderbird 3, and when its does AskWiki would review it.

Friends i am eagerly awaiting your opinions and views about this release and also on my review, please do post in your views below.

Posible options for Yahoo to avoid Microsoft

In midst of the $45 billion (£23 billion) hostile bid from Microsoft, Yahoo is looking for all possible options. Yahoo is most likely to turn down the Microsoft Corp’s 44.6 billion takeover offer as reported by San Francisco Chronicle. So what are the options for Yahoo?

Well, one option being explored is to restart merger talks with AOL - the online business owned by Time Warner group. Although Yahoo! and AOL previously failed to join forces because of differences over price, but with Microsoft eying Yahoo this could be the right time to look for an AOL alliance. On the other hand tie-ups with groups such as Google or Disney are also being considered by the yahoo board.

A partnership with Google may allow Yahoo to outsource its search service, shedding the costs of running its own search engine and sharing ad revenue with its larger rival.

In my opinion, the Microsoft-Yahoo deal has its pros and cons.
Google doesn’t want this Microsoft-Yahoo alliance to go through for sure as Microsoft and Yahoo together equals the majority of instant messaging and email accounts – so coming together they will have like a monopoly over the email, IM and web services. But on the other hand Google does carry an unhealthy dominance in online advertising and web searching – so we need a competition there for sure which this alliance will bring about.

One thing is clear: Yahoo is running out of time, and will need to decide whether it will accept Microsoft’s bid or try to partner with Google or AOL soon. Yahoo’s annual shareholders meeting is in May 2008 and a decision needs to be made before that.

Friends do post in your view/ comments on this deal and its impact.

Stream yourself via your webcam on Yahoo Live

Is Yahoo already moving on the Microsoft strategy? Microsoft's web strategy is called Live, like Microsoft live maps, windows live writer, live.com. But then Yahoo recently launched Yahoo Live. This new site allows anyone with a webcam to stream live video of themselves to a dedicated site.

Although the service is still very much in its infancy and has been down at times. For now it only has few Live channels and about 500 online viewers, something that is expected to rapidly increase in a few days time when it becomes popular. It has a user friendly interface and I think it is worth to give it a try. The service combines many of the best practices developed by early explorers of the medium, tiny startups.

Using Yahoo Live as many as five participants can do video and audio on one page together, it also has a chat option which gives users choice over fonts and colors and express themselves.

Yahoo Live also has put up an API where users can use the service and get content out on other places. The Yahoo Developer Blog talks more about the API. Following as some of the API features:

* Find out who's broadcasting right now
* Get data about past broadcasts
* See snapshots of past broadcasts
* Embed live video in your blog or web page

You can also have a look at the API Docs and there is an example of how you can use it.

Here is also the official Yahoo Live Video
