Dilma e Censura no Campus Party

Panucci 0.3.9: Silent mode and landscape mode by default

Now that the winter term has finally ended, and February is in sight, it's time to do some overdue fixes, releases and other random stuff. After headphoned 1.5 has found its way into Maemo Extras (thanks to the testers), it's Panucci's turn. Here is a list of user-visible changes in Panucci 0.3.9:

  • Playback in "Silent" profile (thanks to Martin Grimme et al in bug 6694)
  • Default is forced-landscape mode, the menu has automatic rotation and forced-portrait mode
  • Volume controls removed (Maemo 5 already handles volume control for us)

If you are a Panucci user, please take the time to review and rate it: Maemo.org package page for Panucci

You can expect at least two apps/releases in the next few days: MaePad (Maemopad+ re-born for Maemo 5) and of course a new version of gPodder with my.gpodder.org sync and the re-designed UI.

A quick brief update on Apple's iPad

Three years after launching 'iPhone' Apple, the computing giant recently launched a new product. It's known as the 'iPad'.

iPad basically is a tablet computer, magazine sized touch screen that can do various tasks like surfing the web, watching movies, emailing, etc.. its like a bigger version of iPhone with more capabilities.

The Device ?
The device weighs just 1.5 pounds, compared with a few pounds for the typical laptop. At a mere half-inch thick, the iPad is also thinner than most laptops, including Apple's super-thin Macbook Air. With a maximum of 64GB of storage, the iPad can hold as many photos, movies and songs as most laptops.
The Pricing ?
The most basic iPad, with 16GB of flash memory, will be priced at $499. A 32GB version will cost $599 and a 64GB version will cost $699. The WiFi-only versions of the iPad will be available in the United States in March at Apple retail stores, the Apple web site and selected dealers. So other contries have to wait...

This sleek gadget aims to revolutionise the publishing business the same way as Apple iPod transformed the music industry and iPhone transformed the telecom industry.

Here is a brief official video of the iPad from Apple.

Ausência do blog

The Good, the Bad, and the Horrifying

The Good:
1. At long last, it was so sunshiney in San Francisco today. Beautiful!
2. I got to spend the evening with my favorite little boy, Freeman Jah. Here he is at dinnertime, clapping to his current favorite song, Party in the USA. Notice his pretty dog, Dora the Explorer, in the background. :) I can't believe Freeman is 19 months . . . he was only 6 tiny lil weeks when I started taking care of him! Our little buddy's getting so grown up--he tells me what he wants to eat, says "please," "thank you," and "wait" (among many other things), and dances like a true champion (C: "Freeman, wanna have a dance party?" F: "Pweeeeease!").

3. For the most part, I've been waking up early enough to not only brew my coffee at home, but make grits for breakfast as well. This ritual has made the mornings much more tolerable.
4. Someone appears to have intercepted my dreams:

I mean really, is that seriously a stiletto shaped bathtub? If there's such thing as personalized heaven, that might be a pretty accurate depiction of mine. What do y'all think?

The Bad:
I might kill my 5th period class. They're monsters. Two are locked up, one is constantly spouting racist nonsense (toward his own race, mind you), a fourth I recently had to kick out permanently because she was in the habit of showing up once a week, cursing me out (literally: F--- YOU!), and then storming out in a rage, one has a problem with pathological lying and is failing every class (despite being at school every day), and THREE are cousins. In the same class: three cousins. Not the best idea. In any case, they just might drive me over the edge. For instance, today at the end of the period I shouted at them: "You guys make me feel so disrespected and sometimes you make me not even like my job!!!" Which was pretty much the lowest point of the year. And the worst part: I don't even feel guilty yet!

The Horrifying:
1. I got the following facebook message from a guy I went out with once, months ago:

from: M.O.
subject: what happened!

i never used my booty call with you. is it still valid?

I'm not sure if there's anything I can really say about that. I think it pretty much speaks for itself. Once I think men can't get any more disappointing, something like THAT happens.

2. American Apparel is the worst company on earth:

Please don't support this incredibly misogynistic company that makes its money from sexualizing and objectifying barely-legal-age women. I've already sent my furious (and concerned, truly concerned) email to them, and urge you to do the same. I've been disgusted with them for years--there are all kinds of articles about AA's leery, sexual predator of a C.E.O., their ads often resemble tasteless pornography, not to mention the gross cultural appropriation of their "Afrika" line-- but this just tops it all. Here are some other examples of their vileness:

Gross me out.

Analise Complementar do Gizmodo. O Nerd aqui vai bater no iPad Sim.

Preciso continuar a mostrar credenciais?

The Danger of Walking While Talking on Cell Phones for Seniors

I have posted numerous cell phones for senior citizens in this blog but I also feel that it's important to inform readers of the dangers that come with these modern devices. A study has revealed that using a mobile phone for seniors while walking may increase an elderly user's chances of being run over by a vehicle.

The study which was that was published online Nov. 5 in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention, aimed to measure the danger's of talking while walking on a mobile phone.

The results shows that participants trying to hold a phone conversation took 25 percent longer to cross the street compared with those without phones and those listening to iPods. Cell-phone users were also less likely to finish crossing the street in the 30 seconds. However, the figures got worst when it comes to seniors.

Art Kramer, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois who conducted the research says, "Older adults on the phone got run over about 15 percent more often [than those not on the phone]...walking and talking on the phone while old, especially, appears to be dangerous"

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that talking on a cell phone takes a bit of concentration which might put someone in danger if he or she happens to be crossing the street. This appears to be amplified for seniors so elderly users are advised not to use their handset while walking.

That's it for this post on the dangers of walking while talking on cell phones for seniors. Keep on dropping by to get more information on services and phones for senior citizens.

O Caso do Google e o Debate Sobre Liberdade

Qual o próximo passo do Google?

So the Progress! playlist has at last been finalized . . . and here it is (Lane, it will be in the mail tomorrow!):

Hot Like Fire--the XX
Here Comes Your Man--the Pixies

I'm finally satisfied with its progression, and super excited to have a physical (and musical) manifestation of 2010's commitment to forward-motion and progress!!! Except that I fully intend to drink wine and watch the Bachelor tonight, which doesn't seem to be very progressive, huh? Whatever, after managing my 5th period hellions today, I deserve some time-wasteful indulgence. ;) Anyone else watching the Bachelor? This guy is such a Goody Two Shoes, gosh.

Another thing I did today: Make some pretty fantastic vegetable soup. I made it for my posse in Russian River last weekend, but I think that performance anxiety + cooking in a place other than my own kitchen yielded less than optimal results. I made it again today, however, and it's back to its delicious essence:

Speaking of my kitchen, that's another thing--it's so luxurious! For those of you who live in SF or another big city, you know how precious a spacious kitchen is. Ours is even bigger than it looks in this picture, cause it's L-shaped and juts out around the fridge. And we even have a separate dining room, so this bistro table is just extra! Here it is:

So this is how I make my yummy veggie minestrone for anyone else trying to endure this gross, chilly, rainy, wet weather:

Dice a large onion, red pepper, and yellow pepper, and saute in olive oil (in a BIG pot) until pretty well cooked
Add a little minced garlic to the mix
Add various spices . . . I use basil, oregano, parsley, Tony Chachere's, chili flakes, s&p
After all this is well sauteed, add a jumbo can of diced tomatoes (either just one, or a jumbo one and a regular one. sometimes I add a little tomato paste as well)
Fill the rest of the pot (minus a couple inches) up with water and 4 Knorr vegetable bouillon cubes . . .
(Meanwhile, cut a large potato into chunks)
Bring to a boil & add the potato
Let the potato cook for a bit, then add a small pasta (I usually use orzo)
Add a can of kidney beans and a can of corn
And that's about it! I usually check the seasoning & add from there. YUM!

I finally finished Girls in Trucks by Katie Crouch (lent to me by my awesome friend Josh Klipp) and let me just say I LOVED IT. And highly recommend it. Imagine that . . . I loved a book about a southern girl in the big city who can't seem to find the right man. How funny! ;) In any case, it's well-written, engaging, relatable, multi-dimensional, quirky, and honest. I'll definitely look out for whatever's coming next from Katie Crouch.

I'm so grateful to have had long conversations with my sis and Lesley (my semi-sis) today . . . I miss my Georgia girls so much. I love California but it's so far away! Oh and speaking of Lesley, check out her ridiculously cute Etsy shop. OMG. Prettiest little girl clothes and accessories and toys you can imagine. And every single one is hand-made! Too bad all my little rascals are baby boys.

And now onto my favorite part of the evening: cheap red wine!

Queen Constance

Constance Jablonski, proving that she has well and truly arrived, has made her American Vogue debut in this equestrian themed fashion story shot by Raymond Meier. Somehow Constance makes posing holding a saddle and brushing a giant plastic horse look natural and high fashion while rocking the fabulous jewel tone looks that are all set to be everywhere this coming Spring. We’re not sure if this story makes us want to go shopping or take up horse riding but all we know is that it’s another milestone for Elite’s superstar and we can’t wait for her to take to the catwalk again at London Fashion week. Can she improve on last Season? Watch this space!

AT&T mobile banking iPhone application

One of the fun things of writing this blog is the right to change my mind. I have been quite critical of the Qualcomm acquisition of Firethorn in the past (read here), but a recent tit bit of information made me sit up and think. It seems that the Firethorn solution has morphed into a fully functional banking portal according to the site appletrendz (read here).

According to this website, an application for the iPhone (running on AT&T) exists (developed by Firethorn). This application allows access to thousands (yes thousands) of different financial institutions from the iPhone through the same interface. As a matter of fact, it seems as if it is possible to access more than one institutions' information on the same application at the same time. The list of features and functions available also seems to be quite extensive. The information available on this site raises a number of questions:
  • What is the business model for this service? Can it be provided in a commercially sound way and is it therefore sustainable?
  • How are the usernames and passwords secured (to allow login to all these thousands of financial institutions). My understanding is that access can be made with the AT&T six digit PIN only. Does this mean that bank login information is stored somewhere? Who is liable when this storage is compromised?
  • What is the competitive advantage of this service over the dedicated service available from each individual bank? How does the banks feel about this service? Do they see it as a threat?
Interesting implications, but well done to Firethorn.

SMS banking is not as simple as it sounds

While it is quite common to talk about mobile banking, it seems that "SMS banking" i9s a term that is used by quite a number of professionals. SMS banking seems to be the categorisation of any interaction with banking services via mobile phone making use of SMS's. SMS banking does not use any menu's, downloadable applications or other types of bearer channels (like USSD).

If this is the definition of SMS banking, I would like to suggest that a number of sub-categories exist within the main category of SMS banking:
  • Mobile terminating SMS banking would be a class of services that sends SMS messages to the subscriber. Alerting services are typical examples of such services.
  • Mobile originating SMS banking would be all of the services that can be implemented by allowing a subscriber to send a SMS to a short-number. The SMS would have a special code and the banking server would respond according to the code in the message. It is possible to distinguish between different types of banking services under this heading:
1. Simple enquiry services (e.g. sending "BAL" to a number and getting the balance delivered to the phone.
2. More complex transaction services. More than one SMS and completing a more complex transaction through a number of "chained" SMS's. The system maintains a state to ensure that different SMS's can be concatenated. (e.g. to pay an account by requesting the outstanding amount and then confirming payment)
3. Combination of SMS transactions with other channels. (e.g. a SMS-based payment request, secured by means of a IVR prompt)

It is clear that SMS banking is not as simple as it sounds and would require very capable professionals to deploy properly.

Egypt regulatory changes can stimulate mobile banking

The Egyptian Financial Supervisory Authority (EFSA) was established last year and brings several regulatory bodies under one umbrella. In an article in the Daily News of Egypt (Read here), the establishment of this body was described as looking after "non-bank" financial products.

Launching mobile financial products as "non-banking" products have been tried before. An approach that I have seen is to offer a mobile wallet as a mechanism to manage investments (rather than savings). This would enable a mobile wallet to be seen as a "non-banking" product and thus could be regulated by an organisation similar to EFSA. A customer would be able to place cash into an investment product and to withdraw from such an investment again utilising a mobile phone. The usual challenges with such an approach is access to other clearing switches (most notably payment systems and ATM switches).

Fortunately the article ends with an afterthought: that the Egyptian Central Bank is finishing final work on a regulatory framework for money remittances and that this will be available soon. The relevance of this paragraph in the article is interesting.

Feelingful.

So this has been one hell of a week, with regard to pretty much all aspects of life. All this strife has been mirrored (a bit too literally) by the rainstorms pouring down all over California. After self-pitying my way home from work on Tuesday, I entered my apartment (more specifically, my room) to find this:

Yes folks, THAT is my ceiling. Right above my bed. My bed was covered in rain water and plaster, and some of you may remember that this is the THIRD time that this very thing has happened in my room in the very same spot above my bed. The landlords have been at my apartment every day since then, but have yet to repair the gaping ceiling hole, as there hasn't been a long enough rain reprieve to get the work done. So alas, I'm still sleeping across my room, trying hard not to be preoccupied with the fear that more of my ceiling is going to collapse down on me.

Two of my 5th period students are incarcerated, which has been another contributing factor to my hell of a week, particularly since final exams were last week and, obviously, they both missed them. One of them is a sweet, funny boy who, along with two buddies, got into a fight with some guys at a park and took their bikes. My student, G.M., is now facing 9 charges, 7 of which are felonies. I've been in back-and-forth conversation with his devastated mother, written a "character letter" to the court, and have spoken with the head teacher at the San Mateo County Juvenile Hall school. All of this is incredibly sad, but the silver lining is that I was able to fax my final exam to the school at the jail, the head teacher got it to G.M., and then he faxed it back to me. Technology, huh? In any case, I was grading G's final today and came across this in one of his answers:

Changes I think need to be made to the current prison system should be better judges who are feelingful and care honestly.

Feelingful! What a neologism! That word made me genuinely smile, and I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be and behave in a "feelingful" manner. How much better would our world be if we all followed my student's advice?

In happier news, Ji, our friend Paul, and I had dinner at Trattoria la Siciliana in Berkeley the other night, and it was fantastic! Paul had pesto shrimp linguini, Ji had some sort of calamari-in-squid-ink pasta, and I had eggplant penne. Delicious! Trattoria la Siciliana really has that "Italian grandmother's kitchen" feel to it--the shotgun setup, decor, authenticity of the menu, friendly Euro-esque wait staff, etc. We'll definitely be back.

I also want to mention this new book by young (and awesome) author Nina LaCour:

It was our first selection in Balboa's teacher-student book club this year, and we all really enjoyed it! The book is about a high school student named Caitlin who is entering her junior year in the wake of her best friend Ingrid's suicide. Despite the weighty subject matter, Hold Still really isn't a sorrowful book; in fact, having been through essentially the exact same experience in high school, I'd say that Caitlin's behavior, preoccupations, and mechanisms of grief are impressively authentic. The "Young Adult Fiction" genre is pretty nebulous . . . what is "young adult," really? . . . but it's certainly fun to read. Nina was generous enough to come talk to our book club at lunch yesterday (what a delight!), and she gave a tremendous little reading/presentation/Q&A session. Check out her website. AND her quirky new blog, Chelsea I Want My Flannel Back.

Good luck staying out of the relentless rain!

Blackberry Magnum - Blackberry Dakota

This is the latest picture of the Blackberry Magnum that had circulated last year. Blackberry is rumored to not be launched by RIM without cause and reason. Qwerty phone with a touchscreen display is visible not have a trackball or trackpad for navigation. The model is very similar to the Blackberry Bold 9000.

Many say Blackberry Magnum will be replaced by the Blackebrry Dakota issue Hybrid features such as Magnum, with Hunter and Touchscreen. In addition there are also reportedly Liquid Lens camera with the autofocus technology, which is better than mechanical focus.

Everything is still not 100% certain, likely RIM will launch the phone with a qwerty + touchscreen, but whether the name Dakota?
