The Back to School Spirit?

Teachers had to report back Wednesday (seriously?  August 10th? Earlier and earlier my dear . . . ), and my summery-rested body has been in a state of shock!  This whole waking up at the crack of dawn thing is for the birds.  And not only waking up early, but plunging into academic discourse about the achievement gap and special education test scores and improving our practice . . . just give me Jersey Shore!!

I'm sorta kidding; it's been great to see all my co-workers and get ready for school, but not gonna lie, I'm missing waking up at 9:30 and being in my bathing suit and watching Jax's sexiest scenes on repeat.

This is what we did after the first day back to school:

(same plan for today)

Other things I'm excited about:

*My stalking plans: Heading up to Napa/Sonoma Sunday . . . but I've learned that Ben F's Evolve Wines doesn't have a tasting room/public "winery."  So that leaves me no choice but to attend this next Friday.

*My latest nail polish find:

*I ordered this to celebrate the arrival of football season!

*My BFF is coming to visit me Labor Day weekend and I cannot wait!!!

us in . . . 2006? 2005?

Oh and speaking of Jersey Shore (several paragraphs ago), my friend Matt and I tweet each other every Jerzday with funny #s about our favorite guidos and guidettes.  Examples:

#getcrazy
#letsspreadsomemono
#whatbeardVinny?
#juiceheadsonvespas
#fistpumpinpope
#guidosatthevatican

Got any to contribute?  Happy Friday!

When I imagine an ideal man . . .

Check out what I discovered today.  A picture of Troy Polamalu in a manbun.  I think this is bad news for me--pretty sure that literally, no one else will ever live up to this level of hotness.  Better prepare myself for spinster-hood.

my hopes, my dreams, my fantasies . . .

Man Candy on a Tuesday

Last week I was remiss and did not link up with Leeann and post a hottie . . . what was I thinking?  We could all use a little pick-me-up, I'm sure.

I'm the queen of obsessing over celebrities.  I mean like I literally get jealous when Tim Riggins hooks up with a girl on Friday Night Lights, and I used to want to throw something at the screen when Pacey and Joey would make out on Dawson's Creek.  I hate hearing buzz about my celeb crushes having potential girlfriends . . . cause even though I know that the chances that I will ever meet them are slim to nil, the idea of another girl putting her paws all over my man makes me green with envy.

(I need to work on this, I know).

We should also discuss the distinctions between gorgeous, sexy, handsome, cute, etc.  Which of the following (if any) do you consider my #2 NFL crush, Mark Sanchez, quarterback for the New York Jets?

(all images from google image)

I can't even talk about that beach picture . . . not appropriately, anyway.

So I have two questions for you:

1. What do you think of my beloved Marky? and
2. Who do you think is the sexiest pro athlete?

Friday I'm in Love!

Happy Friday y'all!  I've been floating around school today, giddy about the impending weekend.  It's upon us!  What fun things do you have planned?

My usual lively weekend plans have been curtailed by a ferocious deadline: While I do have plans to hang out with some of my girls (including an old friend in town from NYC) on Saturday night over wine & Indian pizza, the rest of the weekend  I am on lockdown. Like serious, for real lockdown.  I have a huge manuscript due to Justice Now/Voice of Witness on Monday (essentially, I have 45 pages of a transcribed interview that I have to write into a cohesive, first person narrative).  Fortunately, I am passionate about the project and I love the woman whose story is being told . . . but my goodness do I have my work cut out for me!

Onto business as usual:

Here are some things I've been loving lately.  First and foremost:

1. Behold two of my favorite things:
An NFL hottie + the Manbun

The darling Marianne (who obviously knows me very well) sent me this picture a few days ago, because she knows how dear both of these things are to me.  While I never thought Tom Brady was one of the hottest in the NFL before, I sure as heck do now that he's sporting a manbun!  Oh to be Gisele and make love to that sweet sweet man with the sexiest hairstyle around.  He'ssofine.

2. Chocolate Bananas
Check this out:

This is my new favorite thing.  I'd bought the regular Gone Bananas before at Trader Joe's (a whole frozen banana dipped in chocolate) but these bite-sized ones are so much better!  They are PERFECT for a sweet tooth--delicious and relatively guilt-free (really low-calorie).  I pretty much want to go home right now so I can grab some from my freezer.  If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, try these!

3. Tsunami Love

This morning I got one phone call, six text messages, and a couple emails from far-off loved ones checking on San Francisco (the first tsunami wave was supposed to reach our coastline at 8:08 this morning).  Thank you so much to everyone for all the love and concern.  Things are fine here in California, though I am devastated for Japan as we continue to see the body count rise.  It seems we've had a surge of natural disasters in the past few years, and it's heartbreaking.

Here's hoping that Eastern Japan is able to heal soon, and that its people are overwhelmed with strength and resilience.

Happy Friday!

Happy Birthday Breesies!

Today is a very special day.  Not only is it the 32nd birthday of my beloved Drew Brees, but it's the 2nd birthday of his first son, Baylen!

happy birthday Brees boys!

Baylen was born on his daddy's 30th bday.  How awesome is that?  (Too bad I've already blown that chance for myself, as my 30th birthday is in 7 months and 1 day.  OMG).  I hope that mama and baby brother Bowen are treating them both like the princes they are.

undeniably adorable

Although, gotta admit, I wish Breesy were celebrating his bday weekend by winning a game tomorrow.  In any case, happy birthday to the sweetest quarterback around (next to Matt Saracen).  And also, happy birthday to my twin friends AJ and PJ, whose big day I'll be celebrating later tonight at this awesome place with a gorgeous view of San Francisco.

The Game of the Year

Hello, again!  I've missed you all in my absence . . . I've been dwelling in  holiday and family (and snow!) here in Georgia.  Hope everyone else's Christmas was as beautiful as mine was.  My best gift?  Inches of snow!

on my mama's back deck on Christmas Day
excuse the poor picture quality--camera was dead!

But last night came the real excitement as the Saints took on the Falcons in the Georgia Dome.  Note that I am a major Saints fan currently in Falcon territory!  And given that I grew up in Georgia, you can imagine my facebook news feed was brimming with this kind of slander:

Hunter Willett:  I hope the aints fans are wearing protective gear cause there will be some shankin going on tonight if they want to talk that who dat BS. They will walk into the dome tonight happy and hoping for a win and they will leave with a loss and a knife in that ass.

I mean whoa, man, a little agro there, huh?  In any case, I quietly basked in giddiness and glory since my boys were the first team to take down the Falcons in their own stadium this season.  WHO DAT!

We had at least 20 people over to my dad & Amy's house, and I believe I was the only New Orleans fan in the room . . . but I wore my Love Dat! shirt, fleur de lis earrings, gold glitter shoes, and my Who Dat scarf, and I cheered my boys on proudly.

I'm off to lunch with the family, but I'm eager to catch up on all of your blogs and hear about your holidays!

A Very Christmasty Night

Thanksgiving was great; low-key and filled with family (not mine, but family nonetheless) and food.  I cooked feverishly for about 8 hours and it was totally worth it!  My contributions included stuffing, gravy, squash casserole, cranberry sauce, sweet potato souffle, and a tofurky!  Ha.  (I may have been the only one who ate the tofurky . . . but everything else was a hit!).

And the icing on the cake?  THE SAINTS BEAT THE COWBOYS! (sorry Micaela and Marianne!).  Initially I wasn't worried . . . but then the good ol' boys fired their coach and started winning . . . but we still took care of them in the end.  Close game, though!  (Needless to say, my crush on wide receiver Lance Moore is deepening).

hottie with a body

Out with the old and in with the new, though, so I'm onto Christmas now. ;)  Tonight I decided to stay in and holiday-it-up:  I'm baking these brownies, listening to this Christmas cd, and I just put up my meager little Christmas tree:

I'm considering getting a real one this year.  I haven't in the past, cause I always go home to Georgia about a week before Christmas, and my parents have trees . . . but this year I'm feeling particularly starved for Christmas spirit, decor, music, cookies, etc. :)  Please share any craft ideas/recipes/music mixes that you love!

Have most of you started shopping?  I've done a little bit, but definitely nowhere near half.  Trying to think of some good gifts for little kiddos this year!  Any ideas?

Friday I'm in Love!

It's Friday and I am in love with that fact alone (though daaaaamn is it gonna be hard to go to work on Monday, after having this past Monday off!).  But I'm also in love with:

1. Travel
As you know, I just got back from my friend Amanda's wedding in Cambria, and in the next two and a half months, I'm also going to:

New Orleans

Napa

Guatemala

annnnnd Georgia!

in that order!  Pretty amazing, right? I'm gonna be a busy busy bee this Fall, but it will be well worth it.  Expect lots of postcards (and some blank ones for you, Faiza!).

2. Bay Area Sports Weekend!
The Giants are now officially in the play-offs (I'm done grieving for the Braves), and even more exciting is that the SF 49ers are playing the Oakland Raiders on Sunday--awesome Bay Area rivalry!  Raiders' fans are notoriously . . . rowdy (which I think is awesome), and this morning on the radio, the djs were making fun of them: "The only thing the Raiders can 'beat' is a case!"  and "The Raiders might as well just go ahead and make their mascot a lawyer," etc.  Which is awful.  But pretty amazingly funny.  I mean of all people, I should have a sense of convict humor, right?

3. Sushi
I don't want sushi all that often, cause I'm a vegetarian and I can't eat a whole helluva lot at sushi restaurants, but right now I'm dealing with a ferocious sushi craving, and I've successfully convinced my buddy across the hall to steal away for a late sushi lunch before 5th period.  And on that note, I'm outta here!

Happy Friday!

All-work-no-play

Y'all are gonna witness a very disciplined Claire this weekend.

(Or rather, not witness, since I will hopefully be absent from the blog world).  As much as I'd love to spend the weekend playing around with my cronies, drinking outside in the sunshine, and taking a little beach trip, 'tis not gonna happen.  I'm gonna have my weary head in the books all weekend working on these two things:

1. Voice of Witness writing

You may remember the interviews I did in the South this summer.  I met with four amazing women who had recently been released from prison (and who were brave enough to share their stories with me).  Well, as you can imagine, those recorded interviews had to be transcribed into documents, and now they have to be whipped up into first person narratives.  Tonight is slated for continuing to immerse myself the writing styles of past Voice of Witness books, and tomorrow is all about putting pen to paper (i.e. fingertips to keyboard).  Suffice to say that Sunday I'll be taking a break for football!

2. Campaigning against this.

I don't talk about politics very often on my blog, because frankly, I hate arguing.  But fighting against the death penalty is in my blood--it's in my heart--and it's a big part of who I am.  (If the state doesn't stop the planned execution of Albert Brown, I will do a longer post on this next Tuesday, before heading to San Quentin for an evening vigil).

That said, it's Friday!  And today, my Friday loves are New Orleans themed:

1. Abita Purple Haze

my Whole Foods shopping cart

New Orleans-brewed Abita beer is hard to come by in San Francisco . . . which was why I was overjoyed when Summer told me I could find it at Whole Foods!  Needless to say, I picked up two 6-packs this week, and will be happily sipping away while watching the Saints/Falcons game on Sunday morning (big game for me: I grew up in Georgia, then moved to New Orleans at 18).  Have you had Purple Haze raspberry wheat beer??  If not, get yourself to a Whole Foods, stat.

2. Drew Brees

hi, I'm Drew Brees, and I'm sweet and precious and an amazing quarterback who's gonna lead the Saints in beating the Falcons this week

is well on her way to makin' a baby!  Fingers & toes crossed, prayers sent up, chants repeated!

Happy Friday everyone--hope your weekends involve more fun than mine will!

p.p.s. Make the black bean chili I posted yesterday!

Who dat say they gonna beat them Saints?!

It was already a good week starting Sunday, which I got to spend with some of my favorite boys (big and small).  But then came Monday, and since I'm a

my happiness quadrupled!  You see, the Saints/49ers was a big game out here in the Bay . . . it was not only the 49ers' home opener, but they played against the defending Superbowl champs (aka my favorite team).  And what a freakin' game it was!  22-22 in the last five seconds . . . but the Saints managed a win at the end, even without Reggie Bush.  I can't believe he's gonna be out for up to six weeks!  Speaking of Reggie, I have become mesmerized with this picture of him and his ex, Kim Kardashian, that I recently stumbled upon:

hotttttt x 2

Also:

1. Lots of travel coming up!  More deets later, but it's looking like 4 trips in the next two months (including one to my beloved New Orleans)!
2. I made veggie black bean chili & jalapeno cheddar bread for din last night, and it was a-mazing.  I suddenly remembered that my friend & former roommate, Brenna, used to make this delicious chili from her South Beach cookbook, so I went on the hunt for the recipe.  Posted below!
3. I got a very out-of-the-blue message from an old friend (read: exboyfriend) Sunday night announcing that he was on a road trip across the country and happened to be sitting in a bar in San Francisco.  WILD, right?  We met for lunch the next day at Luna Park, and it was fun/spontaneous/nostalgic catching up.  (Also, felt very mature to talk and laugh with an ex without being emotional or dramatic).
4. Strangely, my 2nd period hellions have been on their best behavior!  I don't know what's in the water they're drinkin but I'm lovin it.
5. I've finally been working out again which always makes me feel better.

Hope your week has been just as good as mine, and if not, then make this chili (but word to the wise: double the black beans and add fresh corn):

Serves 6
Ingredients
Avocado salsa:
1 medium California avocado, peeled, pitted, and finely chopped
1 small tomato, finely chopped
1/4 red onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
Juice of 1 large lime
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Vegetarian chili:
2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
3/4 can (14 to 19 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
3/4 can (14 1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes (with juice)
3/4 can (14 ounces) vegetable broth
1 can (4 ounces) green chili peppers, chopped
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 cup fat-free sour cream
1 lime, quartered
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
12 whole-wheat pita crisps (Phase 2 or 3)
Instructions
To make the avocado salsa:
In a large bowl, combine the avocado, tomato, onion, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, cumin, and pepper. Lightly toss. Let stand for 30 minutes.
To make the vegetarian chili: Meanwhile, heat the oil in a 6-quart Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook, stirring frequently, for 3 minutes. Add the beans, tomatoes (with juice), broth, chili peppers, chili powder, garlic, cumin, and oregano. Simmer for 20 minutes. Serve with the avocado salsa, sour cream, and lime wedges. Sprinkle with the cilantro. Serve the pita crisps on the side, if using.

Cute Boys & NFL Hotties

So this season I'm totally into football.  It definitely has a little bit to do with Tim Riggins, who helped me to patiently observe and learn how the game works (and who also helped me to appreciate hot football players).  There are several teams I like--most having to do with the places I've lived--but I'm a Saints girl at heart.  How can you not root for New Orleans?  That said, I also wanna see victories for the Falcons (I'm from Georgia), 49ers (I live in the Bay Area), and Steelers (my bff and her husband live in Pittsburgh and are big Steelers fans).

Yesterday, while sitting on my couch watching three consecutive football games, I did a little research on hottie NFL players.  Here are my top three football studs . . . these boys bring a whole new meaning to fantasy football:

1. Troy Polamalu--Pittsburgh Steelers

I mean, whoa.

My bestie has a big crush on him, and it's pretty obvious why.  This man with the million dollar hair is fiiiiiiiiiine.  Plus, he does pilates and raises orchids.  And he's a stud on the field!

2. Mark Sanchez--New York Jets

look me in the eyes and tell me you love me

This guy is just my type.  It's his second year as the QB for the Jets, and I can't wait to watch him play against the Ravens tonight!  What a doll.  And he seems like a sweetie, too (I may have read some interviews).

3. Matt Leinart--Houston Texans

ooh la la

"Lion Heart" just signed a one-year contract with the Texans as their 3rd QB.  Poor guy got released from the Cardinals and was 10th pick in the draft.  But he's darlin and optimistic that he'll do better with the Texans under Coach Gary Kubiak.  He's a lefty-thrower and has a precious freakin' smile.

Oddly enough, every one of these beauties comes from USC.  What is it about that school that breeds such smokin' young men?  I just might have to try to become a professor.

And speaking of cute boys, I hung out with my main man Freeman all day on Saturday, and when I arrived at his house, this is what he and his dad were sporting:

I mean, really?  What's cuter than that?  Maybe this:

Freeman & his buddy Milo walking to the pool later that afternoon

As I enjoyed my lunch date with Freeman on Saturday, I thought, you know . . . even if the cutest guys I hang out with are 2 years old, it's not so bad.  They're pretty sweet companions. ;)

So who do you think is the hottest NFL player this season?
