Sorry but I'm not in love.

It's Friday and I'm grateful that it's Friday but other than that, not in love!  Mostly because of the atrocity that happened on American Idol last night.  Lord knows I get too invested in these things, but WTF is wrong with the American public?  Casey Abrams has more talent in his pinky finger than any of those fools combined.  He is musically brilliant--knows music history, technique, and can play multiple instruments.  He chooses quality songs and does magical things with his voice.  I'm pissed at all the voting tweens!

Maybe I won't miss you as much as the girl on the right will, but I sure am sad!

Poor Jessie had to endure my late-night foul-mouth texts after Casey got kicked off.  Not sure I got them all out.  There may be more coming.

*Also annoyed that my rent's going up $100/month.
*Also annoyed about the monster headache that has invaded my dome.
*Also annoyed that I'm trying to do the 30 Day Shred daily, but yesterday I worked ALL DANG DAY and was gone from 7:20 am till 11 pm and ladies & gents, it just didn't happen.
*Also annoyed that I'm in this mood and bein' all !@#%!y because I like my usual cheerful self better.

Sooooooo . . . cheer me up?  Tell me a joke?  Send me a picture of a cute celebrity baby or a smokin' hot athlete?  I'm just sayin, it might help. ;)

Friday I'm in Love!

Yay for Friday!  This week has been busy, but also full of things that I'm lovin':

1. The Orange Cadbury Creme Egg

No more talk about this obsession because I am trying, desperately, to overcome it.  Moving on.

2. Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips
Peep my nails:

Excuse a) the bad picture and b) the marker on my hands (we were making posters for our event in class).  But check out how cute my little fishnet nails are!  This is the second time I've used Sally Hansen Nail Polish Strips and they seriously do last about a week.  It's incredible.  I'm smitten.

3. This Baby's Face

I know yammering on and on about babies can be tiresome, but this baby, Jude Freitag, is otherworldly.  I babysit him and his big brother (whom I also adore) every Thursday, and Jude pretty much smiles at me like this the entire afternoon.  He's unlike any other.

4. Casey Abrams

American Idol makes me realize I'm a little snotty about music.  I totally turn my nose up when contestants choose lame-o songs to sing (eh-hem, Pia, Thia, and Stefano).  Which is why my heart swelled so big when Casey did me proud again by picking CCR last week.  How rad was he with his stand up bass?  I love this guy.  Possibly even more than I loved Andrew Garcia . . . which is sayin' a lot.  I voted my thumbs off on Wednesday night for this dude.  And speaking of American Idol, can y'all believe Pia got sent home?  The most attractive contestant in the history of this show?  With some bangin' vocals?  Crazy.

5. That Which Gets Me through the Week

Happy Friday everyone.  Hope the weekend's fun!  Now tell me what you're loving this week . . .

Friday I'm in Love!

1. This Saturday is my 6th Annual All Girls Valentine's Sleepover!
I am so excited, and I'm telling you, my apartment's gonna look like a Cupid explosion!  I've been gathering banners, flags, napkins, plates, cupcakes, red candy dishes, heart placemats, etc.  It's pretty much gonna be amazing.  Especially since Amy got me some Spanish conversation hearts for the party. ;)  Pics to follow!

2. My friend Elena is arriving from San Diego today!
I'm going to pick her up after school.  Can't wait!  We went to grad school together for a year, and then she moved back down to San Diego, so we only get to see each other once or twice a year.  Yay for visits from far-away friends!  We're gonna have dinner & drinks in my hood in Oakland tonight--keepin' it low-key so we can gear up for tomorrow's shenanigans.

3. Homeroom
What's better than a school-themed mac & cheese restaurant?  Well . . . not a whole lot.  There's a new spot (just opened) in north Oakland called Homeroom (um, how cute is that?) that specializes in all kinds of mac & cheese.  Do yourself a favor and check out the menu here.  I'll expect you all to book plane tickets to the bay shortly thereafter. ;)

You know what I'm not in love with?  This d-bag who kicked Jacee out of his group on Wednesday night.  WTF, yo.  Go back to your karaoke bar, cause there's no room for @$$holes on Idol!

Who are your faves?  At this point, I think the 15 year old Lauren with the wavy blonde hair is pretty top-notch.  That girl has a powerhouse voice!  I also love the Seth Rogan lookalike who rocked the upright bass last night.  Whoa!  And homeboy can scat.

Happy Friday! xo

I have a confession to make

. . . I really, really love Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I abhor the Confederate flag, would rather be in a room with 25 convicted felons than 25 die-hard Skynyrd fans (though it's quite possible there'd be some overlap), and adore Neil Young just as much as I do Lynyrd Skynyrd. I've even had the harrowing experience of a Skynyrd concert, where most attendees were Bud-guzzling, mulleted men draped in oversized Dixie flags. Nevertheless, I can't help it . . . maybe it's my Georgia upbringing, maybe it's the appreciation for southern rock instilled in me by my parents . . . but I think these good ol' southern boys are genius:

And DAMN did Lee Dewyze do Skynyrd some justice last night on American Idol! When he announced that his personal song choice was "Simple Man," my respect for Lee soared. Who would have thought a mainstream-ish midwesterner would be so awesome as to choose one of the greatest songs ever? As soon as he started talking about it, I knew I was gonna love it. And he was brilliant. Convicted, honest, and pure . . . it was amazing. Even if you don't watch Idol, go to youtube pronto and look up Lee's renditions of both Simple Man and Hallelujah (Simon's choice for Lee).

Speaking of which. When Simon chose Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah for Lee to sing, I was like awww man! for real?? I mean it's probably the most covered song in the world (watch out--Miley Cyrus might be next), and we've already heard the dang song this very season (though Tim's version was forgettable). But I guess the smack-talkin' Brit knows what's up, cause Lee ROCKED IT OUT. Seriously, I got the chills. And then immediately watched it again. The choir and the horns helped make the performance killer, no doubt, but Lee himself was on his A-game. INCREDIBLE!

I'm a total convert now. (Though I haven't gotten over my love for Andrew Garcia).

Other things I'm excited about this week:

*My amazing package to Micaela (I'm pretty proud of myself for this one)
*Cosmos, Cupcakes, and Couture (Ummmm OMG! SATC 2 party this Thursday night--with passes for the premiere, $500 to Tiffany's, and Jimmy Choos up for grabs!)

(I kinda want this for my living room)

*the Grey's Anatomy season finale (I'm a little embarrassed that 1/2 of my excitement this week is about tv)

We're halfway through the week! Hope yours has been a good one so far. :)

♥ Gone but not Forgotten ♥

we'll miss you!!!

Andrew Garcia, my friends . . . kicked off American Idol last night. The day has finally come. I was in some way prepared for it, as I know that this whole pageant is just whittling the days away until Crystal Snidesox stands on the final stage, but I just wasn't really ready for it yet.

(For the record, I think that Crystal Bowersox has a freaking amazing, powerhouse voice . . . I just think she is a little full of herself, needs an injection of charm and/or personality, and that she sounds the same in every song).

Andrew took it like a champ. He showed the perfect amount of emotion, smiled that big sweet smile, and was incredibly gracious to everyone . . . what a dearheart! I mean seriously, he's SO sweet. And I just love his tender growly voice--it's so much more unique to me than anyone else's voice. Admittedly, his Hound Dog rendition was a little eh, but wtf was he eliminated before Tim Jonas-hair Urban? I guess the tweens are keeping him around cause they think he's good-looking. Whatevs.

So long, Andrew! American Idol won't be the same without you!

Guess what this Saturday is? PROM! I can't wait to see all my kiddos dressed up in their pretty (or at least brightly colored) dresses & tuxes and walk around the dance floor insisting that they stop grinding doggy style! It's gonna be amazing. One of my students said to me the other day: "Ms. Kiefer, will you go to prom with me?" I responded, "Uh, NO." Him: "Pleeeease? I'll take you to Elephant Bar!"

Ha! Classy . . .

Happy almost Friday!

Oh! And check out Micaela's amazing giveaway here. Not only is the giveaway fantastic (chalkboard mug, Keep Calm & Carry On journal, postcard, bunny buttons, black bow necklace!), but she and her blog are delightful. I read it every day!

I Guess I Have a Type

but most of us already knew that. I just can't help it, I love this guy:

(For those of you not in the know, Andrew is one of this season's American Idol contestants). I love his sweet croon, his bad-ass-nice-guy swagger, and the fact that he cries when he's overcome with emotion. :) My friend Jason thinks he looks like a furby, which I guess is pretty true, but that just makes him all the more adorable. No one loved last night's rendition of Heard it Through the Grapevine, but I voted for him like a zillion times so he'll be cool, I'm sure. ;) Who is everyone else rooting for?

Happy middle-of-the-week, and wish me luck with the hardest poem assignment I've received in years . . .
