The Solution to Racism in America

While Jennifer was here, she showed me something magical: the following commercial for Red House Furniture in High Point, North Carolina.  I emailed the link to drollgirl immediately, knowing it was up her alley, but then I decided I had to share it with the rest of you.

Videos can be tedious but trust me . . . this one's worth it.

Shivers & Goosebumps

I know videos can be tedious to watch.  I often start watching a video someone's posted on facebook or a blog, and then skip to the next thing after about 30 seconds (my attention span is that of a flea's).

But as a person who teaches kids of incarcerated parents, I find this video so moving.  It made me get teary toward the end and my legs got goosebumps!  Most of my students are all too familiar with what this guy is saying in his brilliant & haunting poem.

Not to be preachy, but there are 2.4 million children in this country with a parent who is incarcerated.  If we don't intervene/step up/embrace them, it's all too clear that they're gonna slip through the cracks.

5th Period Conversation Today

Scene: When I began writing the initial journal question on the board in room 102 today, an incredibly foul smell began to permeate the room. It immediately became clear that one of them had set off a stink bomb in my classroom. Did you know those actually exist? If not, consider yourself lucky. It's the foulest thing I've ever smelled in my life.

So we move outside to have class in the quad. Because several of my little darlings have severe ADHD, this was problematic, as there were people and classes walking by regularly.

ZT: Ms. Kiefer is one of those white girls who wants to be black. She probably listens to hella Keyshia Cole and wishes she was black.

GM: No I think Ms. Kiefer just hella cares about black people!

ZT: Ms. Kiefer, what kind of guys do you like? Do you crave black men?

***

I'm serious, y'all. This convo took place, verbatim, 10 minutes ago. God help me. I should also mention that I found ZT wandering the halls (stalking my office) this morning when he should have been in 4th period, so I personally escorted him up to Mr. Porter's room. All the way up there, he shouted through the hallways (and into classrooms): "BLACK PEOPLE DISTURB THE HALLWAYS!"

And in case there was any confusion, ZT is black.

XOXO, happy mid-week!
