No Idg Now

The First Steps To a Basic Strategy

The game is one of the simplest ever invented. The rules are few and there's no physical effort involved in playing it. You just sit, look at a few cards and make your bets. That's probably why it's become one of the most popular casino games of all time. Of course everyone knows the House has an edge. That's how it pays all the expenses for running the casino. Remember it makes no difference whether this is a casino in the real world or online. You still need people and a base. So common sense tells you that no-one beats the House unless they invest some effort. Put another way: if everyone could beat the House without breaking sweat, the casino would go out of business in a day. This produces the headline: no pain, no gain. You have to put in some study time to master the basic strategy.

So what is this strategy? Over the years, some serious math types did all the work for you. They calculated the best way to play all the card combinations and wrote them down in simple charts. If you were going to play in a real casino, you would have to learn all these rules. That saves you having to pause before every decision to check the charts. Not only would the other players around the table be less than impressed, the casino would probably suggest you leave. But playing online changes all that. You can consult the charts as often as you like before deciding which card to play. It may be slow but, if you get the strategy right for every hand, you just shifted the odds in your favor.

So what are these charts? The first gives you the rules on when to split a pair. The strategy changes depending on the value of the cards dealt to you and the value of the card you can see the Dealer holding. So it starts with the rule that you split a pair of aces no matter what the Dealer holds, and goes down to the choices when you hold a pair of 2s. The other two charts deal with hard hands and soft hands. A hard hand is when neither card is an ace and the strategy changes significantly depending on the card held by the Dealer and the table rules on when the Dealer must stand or draw. A soft hand contains an ace and is easier to play because you can always draw one more card without busting - this takes some of the pressure off the play. I started off by saying blackjack is an easy game but, like all games, you can play for fun or you can take it seriously and play to win. In this case, you are more likely to win if you learn the charts and can play the strategy without thinking. To really take on the House edge, you also have to become a card counter but that's a whole new story because it does not work in a virtual casino. For now, focus on the basic strategy and start your winning blackjack career.

Ken Uston

Ken Uston - Blackjack Hall of Fame

Uston burst onto the scene in 1977 with the publication of The Big Player, co-authored with Roger Rapaport. In this book, Uston exposed the secrets of Al Francesco's big player teams. The book caused a falling out between Al and Ken that lasted for years, as Al felt Ken had betrayed his trust as well as his teammates.

But this book caused an upheaval in the world of card counting, changing the ways that professionals looked at the blackjack and attacked it. Three of the most successful international blackjack teams-the Tommy Hyland team, the MIT team, and the Czech team-all were founded in 1978, the year after Uston's book was published.

Al and Ken later patched up their relationship and Uston went on to start many blackjack teams of his own. He was a personality on a grand scale, who legally challenged the casino industry in the courts of both New Jersey and Nevada. His playing career spanned two decades of play at the highest levels, and included card counting, BP teams, hole card techniques, and concealed computer play.

Ken is also the author of Two Books on Blackjack, Million Dollar Blackjack, and Ken Uston on Blackjack.

He died in 1987 at the age of fifty-two.

STAR SPOTTING AT T4

We had an amazing time at T4's Stars of 2009 yesterday where Elite took over the Rimmel Catwalk Stage to launch the very first UK casting for Elite Model Look 2010. Our team of scouts braved the rain to check out the queue at Earl's Court and then race their 10 best finds to our backstage area for the fastest of catwalk classes before the girls were thrown into the spotlight to strut their stuff....

After all 10 girls had walked for the judges our winner was the gorgeous 16 year old Lottie O'Donoughue from Bromley, who impressed us so much that we're putting her straight into our EML final next summer. With 7 whole months to prepare we can't wait to see what she can do...

The stunning Rochelle Wiseman of girl group the Saturdays made time before her apperance on the main stage to add a sprinkling of celebrity sparkle to the judging panel... here she is with our EML UK 09 winner Nyasha Matonhodze, who's looking every inch the supermodel herself!

With our presenters - Hollyoaks' Matt & Darren, plus Paloma Faith, Ke$ha, Example and Rochelle's bandmate Frankie joining us backstage, it was one crowded green room.... EML 09 world finalist Emily Smith made sure she got the shots though - here she is meeting Edith Bowman, who was also presenting on our stage

THE NEW BRIT PACK

EML UK 2009 - SUCCESS STORIES

With our scouts hitting west London's T4 Stars event over the weekend, it's a good time to look back at the little gems we unearthed during the 2009 contest. As well as our world finalists Nyasha, Beth and Emily, we're now representing four other great girls who wowed us at the UK Final back in August... say hello to Elite's new Brit Pack!

Tips on choosing & buying New or Used Mobile

The phone is already a requirement of everyday life for some people, and maybe you too. Naturally, given with this communication tool you can call anyone and from where you are. Conversely, you also can be reached anywhere.

Through this article, I will try to share the experience of buying a phone (here I will only limit the writing on his handset, while the card may be discussed on another occasion). This paper mainly aimed at the new you want to buy a phone or want to change. There are several things you need to consider:

1. Determine the needs and customize your phone with your finances.
Now almost every month out of a series of brand new cell phone different. They each have their own privileges. The more complete facilities, the more expensive price. If my own Father-Mother, frankly just need to call HP create and send SMS.
So, I do not feel a need HP expensive facilities weird. Why would I buy if there enggak later that I use. For example, games or game facilities at HP are very rarely used, no matter how good his game. Or facilities that can track the ringing or polytone, which come to think really the same function, like the sound of anything.
Else if there is a cheap phone memory can store phone numbers more fit, I want to buy it, because I need them for storing phone numbers of my colleagues. So here, you are in control, determine your needs, then decide the appropriate phone earlier needs.

2. Look for references to the appropriate mobile
Now you already know your needs and your budget have, now why do not we try to find the series and what brands to suit your needs were. You can find out through advertisements in newspapers, internet, or while walking in the mall. You can also find references by your friend know enough about HP.
Well, when you search for references, find out about its features (benefits provided), the new selling price and how the prospects of the brand if we want to resell it later if prices scar about going down a lot or not. If you're the kind of person who likes mutually HP every 3 - 6 months time, of course you have to find the selling price of HP's marks are not too far from the new price.

3. Decide where you will buy it and do tests there.
Where are you going to buy a mobile phone? In an official agent? Ordinary shops, or at the Shopping Center as ITC Roxy in Jakarta? The tips, if you want to compare prices between one store with other stores, come to the HP shopping center. There you can compare prices and services retailer. Usually there are also many references to the former mobile phone.
But if you just want to buy a simple HP or "market" (usually not much price difference between one store and others) and your home away from shopping centers, do not forget to take your transportation costs are also there. Lest total count even more expensive than if you buy it in stores near your home.
Once you've bought the HP you want, do not forget to try them all in there. Usually I always ask for the phone and its SIM card activated directly by the vendor. All also have taught how to use and its functions.

4. Always ask for guarantees to reduce problems later on.
Why do I say that? Because none of us who want a headache later if HP is broken. So, if we are in trouble later on the phone, take it back to the dealer again. The hope, so they can repair or replace it. That's what the warranty. Well, now there's more to do with buying a HP in a place easily accessible from the home? So if there is anything we can quickly go to that place without excessive exit fees. Warranty will be very important if the goods we buy is a sophisticated model, which is very hard to find a service place, or if any, the cost becomes very expensive.

5. Just buy the former if you have limited funds
Nothing wrong if you buy a secondhand if you are not enough funds to buy a new one. Just keep in mind, buy a cell phone can be used as such as buying a cat in a sack, because we often do not know the history and condition of the cat.
Indeed sometimes there are still old HP warranty. But most do not. Well, if you have to buy a secondhand, buy into the retailer's store that you know well. Thus, instinct and trust factor will become increasingly important in buying HP used. When you buy a new phone this time, probably better bring a trusted friend who may have friends or subscription HP store.

Choosing and Buying Tips Used Phones

Mobile or cellular phone or mobile phone, once again unceasingly spread 'it pesona' for consumers and prospective consumers. No longer charm lies in the sophisticated communications technology has to offer, but also in lifestyle alias 'lifestyle', which contain certain elements: Prestige! Communication is no longer as an option, but the duty and obligation. No wonder, even the need for devices like the more 'out of control' alias increased, from time to time.

However, despite having the same needs for phone devices, it still can not be denied that the purchasing power of each customer and potential customers are not the same. Many 'parameters' or 'restrictions' which is owned by them in determining the choice of mobile devices they will use other than the price, such as features, models, functional, and so on.

Currently, mobile phones used increasingly in demand by potential customers. Because, the consumers began to creative thinking. Instead they spend their money for a new phone with the functions of the 'standard', the former is better but has a feature 'above standard'. The value of money spent is almost the same, but the 'capability' which is owned by the mobile phone is different.

Well, here are tips for potential customers who will choose and buy a secondhand mobile phones, in order to obtain the goods are still very decent and normal, with a relatively cheap price.

1. Identify the type of phone will be Purchased

Before you go to the outlet or counter HP, make a picture of what kind of phone would you buy, such as: brand, type, and type of communication services (GSM or CDMA). This is done, so you are not confused and easily distracted when faced with many choices in one of the counters that you visit HP. Or if necessary, find your friends who have the same phone with the type of phone you want. So you already have a definite picture of the mobile phone.

2. 'Survey' Market Price

Find the market price of the phone you want, whether new or used, as a material consideration in the 'measured' value mobile phone price with a lifetime, the value of depreciation, trends, etc.. References about the price of the phone can be found through the magazines or tabloids about the phone, or ask directly counter to some HP, as a comparison.

3. Thorough Physical and Fittings Mobile

Whose name secondhand, everywhere must have a disability. Never mind the former, who had also sometimes been a 'birth defect' aka 'factory defects'. But, at least we can get the junk that is still good, or they call 'BSB', ie Used Like New. We are looking for items that have a 'disability' is as little as possible, or maybe a nearly flawless.

Thorough physical integrity of the phone, whether it's casing, keypad or the keypad, LCD, battery, charger, dos (equate no. Imei available on DOS with no imei phone listed entity rear) + manual, headset or handsfree (optional), the bolts, and seal. In addition to the physical integrity issues, as well as 'originality' or 'authenticity' external components (performance) and the (hardware / hardware) phone. One way to recognize the authenticity of these phones, one of which can be seen from the stickers on the phone, which shows the identity of authorized distributors. Be careful with the appearance of 'Asphalt' aka 'Original but False'.

4. Thorough functionality and Operational Mobile

Recognize the standard menu of the phone, and its entire contents and functions of the mobile phone. Try to operate the device, by first filling it with various SIM Card, both GSM and CDMA technology. GSM technology for mobile phones, there are 3 frequencies are used, namely 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz. In Indonesia, which is currently used is the 900/1800 MHz frequency. While the frequency used in the 1900 MHz CDMA mobile phone technology, in addition to the use of 850 MHz frequency.

Check the signal strength and battery, by watching the indicators listed in the LCD or the display on the mobile layer. Not until later was that you bought your phone, the battery-nge'drop 'aka easy out, difficult to refill at-'charge alias' and the signal is very weak. Try also to operate the phone, from ease of response on the button, contrast, dark-light, and color LCD display or mobile, condition and volume speaker, microphone, vibrator vibrating phone menu alias, alias buzzer sounds a speaker phone ringtones from them, its volume.

Then for the software, try the features of the phone (if available), such as: device connectivity (IR - Infra Red, Bluetooth, data cable), external memory (MMC, RS-MMC, etc.), hands-free, application software provided mobile phone and also a standard code number or code from the mobile phone is.

Click on any key with recklessly, think of it like a child playing with phone, punched the button, and buttons as much as possible as long as possible. Note, if then the phone hangs or freezes, the phone certainly is 'not feasible' use. Be careful with camouflage made by mobile phone salesman who 'cheat', from the outside look good, inside 'devastated'.

5. Scrutinize Sale and Purchase Agreement and the Services 'After Sales'

Ask about the warranty is owned by the phone, whether the warranty from the distributor is still valid or have expired. Then, make sure guarantee or warranty is given by the counter device, warranty service or parts, and how long the warranty is valid.

6. Choose a Professional Counter

To avoid the 'fraud' in the buying and selling mobile phones, should you choose to counter a professional and reliable. Do not be fooled by the appearance of the building counter and the words of the salesman filled with sweet 'seduction'. Or maybe, you ask for advice or recommendations from friends who've been to a particular counter. And if you do not see phones that meet the criteria that match what you want, it's better to move to another phone or postpone the purchase of the phone that day.

Good picking and mobile shopping, do not forget: stay alert about the dangers of pickpockets who preyed on around you!

Experimental Maemo 5 UI: Alternative Portrait Mode

The usual way to do rotation to portrait mode in Maemo 5 is to set special flags on a window and let the window manager rotate our window and relayout after the switch. It's not as fast as it could be, and task switching (even between two portrait mode apps) is only possible by switching to landscape mode. Apart from that, things like the system menu don't work in portrait mode.

For some applications, an alternative could be to stay in landscape mode and simply rotate widgets without the window manager even knowing...

It's probably best described in a short demo video of how a simple media player could look like (sorry for the sloppy video, forgot my digital camera, so the webcam had to act as a replacement) - have a look, and tell me what you think. (For comparison, have a look at the older Panucci rotation video that uses the "normal" way of going into and leaving portrait mode.)

The Newest Cell Phone Models

Searching for the Newest Cell Phone Models from
AT&T, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon?

Nationwide carriers know that one way to attract new customers - and keep their old ones - is to consistently introduce new cell phone models into their phone arsenal.

But finding your newest cell phone model can be both tedious and time consuming because, most consumers don't know where to look!

Here's a list of tips and resources to help locate those hard-to-find or sought after phones!

Try Your Carrier's Official Website First

Carriers tend to horde their newest cell phone models, and sell them exclusively on their website.

Why?

That way they can control:

  • Their Profit - Carriers loose a chunk of revenue when resellers are allowed to market their latest phones. By selling the phones exclusively at their site, they keep all the profit.
  • The Market - Carriers know one sure way to kill a market is to flood it! Especially if that phone is much-in-demand.

Controlling where and how newly released cell phone models can be purchased helps retain their customer base, and minimizes competition.

    Verizon Wireless Current Promotions including:

  • DROID by Motorola
  • DROID ERIS by HTC
  • LG Chocolate® Touch
  • Blackberry Storm 2
  • AT&T Wireless Phone Promotions including:

Wirefly.com - is the nation's largest online cell phone dealer. The official website features newly released phones from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint/Nextel, Alltel and US Cellular. Usando o modo paisagem no Nokia 5800XM

    1)Lg 2)Sony 3) Motorola 4)Samsung e 5) Nokia.

Pelo índice de, faria negócios novamente

    1)Motorola 2)LG 3) Sony 4) Samsung e 5) Nokia

Card Association certification of mobile payment schemes

Using mobile phones to secure card-not-present transactions have been announced frequently. This is probably one of the areas in payment where innovation is rife. Anyone that have experienced the inconvenience of a stolen card and this card then being used for fraudulent transactions on the Internet will appreciate the advantage of using mobile phones in this way.

This blog is not about the many attempts to secure card payments in a proprietary way - and many examples exist - but about the fact that the card associations now seem to be certifying some of these solutions. I think that this is a major step forward with significant implications. The fact that unique payment solutions (some of these being very different to what we generally would have done) now get Credit Card Association endorsement or even licensing is indeed very interesting.

While quite a few of these examples can be found (one that we at Fundamo are intimately involved with), I would like to just quote two:
    • Mastercard recently announced their Chip Authentication Program (CAP) which allows for a One Time Password (OTP) to be generated by a phone (Read here). This means that someone can use a card on the Internet with a OTP that has been generated by their mobile. This is quite interesting as merchants can validate the OTP for a specific transaction. Security is much higher and the computing power of the phone is utilised well.
    • The mCheck solution deployed on Airtel in India is also an interesting case study.(Read here). While I do not know the detailed architecture of the solution, it is my understanding that the encryption capabilities of the SIM card is used to good effect to secure an ordinary Credit Card transaction. This is solution is endorsed by VISA, even though it is very specific to mCheck.
This approach, while commendable, may lead to a situation where so many acceptable schemes are available that it becomes extremely difficult to keep track of legal mechanisms. The allocation of liabilities may also not always be clear to the uninformed. The proliferation of different Credit Card Schemas could lead to some problems.

The LG VX-4700 Handset for Senior Citizens

I was exploring Ebay when I came upon an article called the "Top 3 Best Cell Phones For Elderly And Senior Citizens." Naturally, I was interested in the guide since I was hoping to find a phone that I can feature on this blog.

Luckily, I found that one the phones, the LG VX-4700, has not been featured on this blog. So let's take a closer look at his potential mobile phone for seniors and see if it can be a good device for the elderly.

    LG VX-4700
Strengths: Let's look at the features and capabilities that makes this phone a good cellphone for seniors.

The LG VX-4700 is a good device for seniors and users who have the misfortune of suffering from hearing difficulties. This handset is one highest rating phone for earset volume and has been tested to have great call quality.
The phone is also hearing aid compatible.

This handset for senior citizens also comes with TTY/TDD capabilities which enables all information to be given digitally. Users with profound hearing loss can benefit from this feature since the information does not require the use of the auditory sense.

The main display on this phone is small at only 1.5 inches when measured diagonally. However, it makes up for it by being bright and exceptionally readable.

The keys are also a bit small but they are slightly raised above the surface of the phone which makes dialing easy and fast.

    Weaknesses:
The LG VX-4700 also has its share of drawbacks and flaws.

The external display is quite disappointing. This feature provides the time, the date, the battery life, the signal strength, and caller ID. However, it is very small and in monochrome.

The battery life on this handset is also mediocre. Simple handsets usually have strong battery life since they do not have any advanced features that consume a lot of power.

That's about it for this preview on the

Experimental Maemo 5 UI: gPodder Episode Actions

With the Long Weekend just a little more than one week away, I though about doing some experiments with gPodder's UI. Some users want a quicker way to play/download/delete episodes instead of opening the shownotes window and using its application menu. Here's one approach I tried out today (I know the icons are pixellated and ugly - please consider them as placeholders):

The idea is that you click on an episode, and instead of opening the shownotes view, you get this selection screen where you can choose to play/download/delete the episode or view the shownotes. Of course there have to be some fancy animations, because that's what all the cool kids do today. Just watch the video on YouTube and tell me what you think in the comments here (especially in terms of non-standard UI and annying animations - seriously ;).

In unrelated news, headphoned 1.4 for N800/N810 has been released and pushed to Maemo Extras with support for Panucci and MPlayer for all your "public transport situation" avoidance needs.

The technical requirements for interconnected mobile banking

This posting is an attempt at listing the key technical requirements that must be present in order for two mobile banking systems to be able to inter-connect. This means the ability of a subscriber in one system to be able to send money (preferably in real-time) to another subscriber on the other system.

Both systems must be able to do the following:
    • Adhere to the same message routing strategies. It is essential that the payment instruction issued on the one system should travel to the correct destination system and then that the actual target account be identified. This is not a simple problem as the routing should cater for multiple accounts associated with the same telephone number. Banking systems use the concept of a BIN to route payment systems, Telco systems use international dialing codes and operator codes (or look-up tables if number portability has been implemented). Which one of the two should banking systems use?
    • A mechanism to clear the transaction and ultimately settle the transfers must be implemented in the same way by both systems. This is not a trivial issue as clearing and settlement creates all kinds of liabilities that must be analysed properly and catered for in the selected system. Reconciliation and detection (and correction) of discrepancies are also important.
    • One of the most difficult interconnect problems is the schema for the management of uncompleted transactions. This type of situation would occur when the originating system did not get a confirmation nor a decline message from the destination system. The resolution of such conflicts are extremely complex. The design of roll-backs, pending transactions etc. is not trivial.
    • Reporting systems must be agreed on.
    • Technical handshakes, unavailability of one of the systems and consideration like load management (because of the potential huge volumes) must be well defined in order for the solution to work.
In my interaction with industry specialists and technical suppliers, it is my perception that this problem is not understood well at all. Very few companies have the experience and expertise to design and build such systems.

The popularity of Mobile Banking Worms

I found Twitter to be one of the best sources of information. I am constantly logged into the service (either by means of my PC or iPhone). One of the streams that I track is a search on the keyword "mobile banking".

On the 24th of November the Twitter search stream filled up with the following news item: "New Worm Attacks iPhones, Targets Mobile Banking ". I think that this Tweet was re-tweeted probably hundred times. In reading the associated press (here), it is clear that this is probably a no-event. The attack focused on clients of ING in the Netherlands and only if the subscriber's iPhone has been jailbroken. The target community for this attack is probably less than ten phones.

So why is it that people find this article so interesting. I believe it is because of the following reasons:
    • Anything related to an iPhone is news
    • The potential risk associated with remote banking is always interesting. It seems that security and how it can be penetrated is always newsworthy.
    • And then, could it be that mobile banking is also of sufficient interest that people want to hear about it.
