Sunday Brunch & some Stalktalk!

In a valiant effort to postpone the end of summer, I spent pretty much the whole weekend eating and drinking with friends.  From a dive bar with my teacher friends on Friday night, to a biker breakfast on Saturday morning (you heard that right!), to an impromptu Japanese dinner in Berkeley on Saturday night with my friend Helen, to today's brunch with my college friend, Tara, at what I think might be my new very favorite place:

Chop Bar, Oakland, Jack London Square

my friend Tara with her bloody mary
she's from the northeast, she can't help her snark ;)

ask me what I'm drinking and I'll tell you:
BEN F'S EVOLVE WINE

see?

Not only was Sauvignon Hottie delicious, but so was the food!  Tara and I shared chilaquiles & eggs ala cazuela with a grilled veggie mojo sauce . . . YUM.  I confessed to the waitress that I ordered the Evolve as part of a Ben F. stalking mission, and she said, "That's so funny, he was just in here a couple weeks ago!"  I'll catch up to him someday.  It'll happen.  And if you're curious as to whether I tweeted that picture of me drinking Evolve wine to Ben F . . . the answer is immediately.

isn't it cute in there?

Hope all of you had as decadent a weekend as I did.  Lord knows I'm making up for it now, since it's the  last day of my 20s and the first day of school.  Wish me luck with my '11-'12 monsters!  Can't wait to meet them. :)

The Back to School Spirit?

Teachers had to report back Wednesday (seriously?  August 10th? Earlier and earlier my dear . . . ), and my summery-rested body has been in a state of shock!  This whole waking up at the crack of dawn thing is for the birds.  And not only waking up early, but plunging into academic discourse about the achievement gap and special education test scores and improving our practice . . . just give me Jersey Shore!!

I'm sorta kidding; it's been great to see all my co-workers and get ready for school, but not gonna lie, I'm missing waking up at 9:30 and being in my bathing suit and watching Jax's sexiest scenes on repeat.

This is what we did after the first day back to school:

(same plan for today)

Other things I'm excited about:

*My stalking plans: Heading up to Napa/Sonoma Sunday . . . but I've learned that Ben F's Evolve Wines doesn't have a tasting room/public "winery."  So that leaves me no choice but to attend this next Friday.

*My latest nail polish find:

*I ordered this to celebrate the arrival of football season!

*My BFF is coming to visit me Labor Day weekend and I cannot wait!!!

us in . . . 2006? 2005?

Oh and speaking of Jersey Shore (several paragraphs ago), my friend Matt and I tweet each other every Jerzday with funny #s about our favorite guidos and guidettes.  Examples:

#getcrazy
#letsspreadsomemono
#whatbeardVinny?
#juiceheadsonvespas
#fistpumpinpope
#guidosatthevatican

Got any to contribute?  Happy Friday!

What I'm Workin' With

The idea of leaving Capella (our resort in Cabo) is downright depressing.  So I just won't think about it. The physical beauty here is astounding: our back patio, complete with a private plunge pool, overlooks the resort and the Pacific, which rages onto the beach day & night.  The water is teal-clear.  We have a two-level white couch covered in colorful pillows.  We each have our own bedroom and shower (that's not entirely true; I'm sharing with Jude). :)  Our butler makes us homemade salsa, guacamole, tortilla chips, and decadent meals.

When we started to run low on Corona, another case was delivered promptly.  Today Jude woke up with swimmer's ear, and a doctor came to our condo and had antibiotics delivered within half an hour.

And the staff.  They run around with towels and bottles of water in bins of ice.  They are so friendly (and some of them very cute!).  I wish this could be real life.  Here are some pics:

the spicy mango margarita with chipotle salt rim

More pictures to come.  All of these are just iPhone pics--totally unedited.  Cari and JJ have a really nice camera, so I'll share more pictures when they upload those.  In the meantime, I am happier, tanner, and more well-rested than I've been in ages.  Trying to figure out a way to move here . . .

There's a Theme Here . . .

Evidently when I said I was gonna take a break from healthy eating while visiting friends in southern California, I wasn't kidding!

and speaking of unhealthy . . .
I made us some mac & cheese Saturday night

but then I balanced it out with this

Please excuse the terrible photos--my camera desperately needs to be charged, so these are less-than-optimal cell phone pics.  But I've been more consumed with hanging out with my dearest peeps than trying to get good pictures.  We've been having a blast!  Not to mention, we made a little stop here yesterday:

forget seasonal flavors . . .
I'll always be loyal to red velvet

I have to kiss my friends goodbye in the morning, but at least I'll have something to distract me . . . Superbowl XLV!  What's everyone doing for the big game??

Girl Time is the Best Time

Yesterday I was feeling all kindsa bluesy, so when my friend Amanda (whom you read about here) came to my office after school and suggested that instead of working out, like we'd planned, that we do something more fun and girly, I couldn't have nodded my head more quickly.

Important to know: I almost never get my nails done.  I love the experience of a mani/pedi at a salon, but I also enjoy doing my nails myself (smoothing & filing & clipping & painting, all while sitting on my couch watching tv with a glass of wine, is so therapeutic to me!).  Therefore, I rarely fork over the cash to get 'em done pretty at a nail salon.  However, yesterday, going to get a mani/pedi followed by a drink at a neighboring bar just seemed oh so right.

So we hopped in my car and went here:

San Francisco Sun, Cole Valley

I've actually been to San Francisco Sun many times before, cause I used to live in the neighborhood, and while I don't get my nails done often . . . when I do, I go there.  I'd like to point out that for $30, you get a delightful manicure and pedicure in the best spa chair I've experienced while enjoying complimentary wine.  That's right, free booze with your mani/pedi!  Suffice to say, Amanda and I were in heaven.  It's pretty in there, everyone is nice, and the owner, Colette, is so neighborly (we ran into her afterwards at the pub next door).

I forgot to take a picture of Amanda's nails, but here is what I chose:

these little piggies went to the salon!

I left my camera in Georgia, so these are merely iPhone pics--my fingernails are actually more light purpley in person.  I love the way they look!  I chose an OPI lilac shade for my fingers and an Essie purple-pink for my toes (I always go darker on my toes).  I have to confess that I already can't wait to go back (but next time I'm gonna try out the gel manicure--anyone done that yet?).

After our decadent nail experience, we hopped over to Kezar Pub for a beer and some nachos:

Kezar is a neighborhoody pub between Cole Valley and Haight/Ashbury, and they have a fine selection of beers on tap (I got Blue Moon; Amanda got Stella).  We split a small nachos and had some great convo and I left feeling totally rejuvenated.  Seriously.  There is nothing in the world like girlfriends to make you feel better about boy problems.  I'm so grateful for my friends (and my city!).

Hope everyone's having a great week . . . I really want to talk about Snooki getting arrested, but this post is already pretty long, so that will have to wait till tomorrow. :)

Hello from Georgia!

As soon as I took my seat on the airplane, right next to a couple decked out in head-to-toe Harley Davidson gear (man with long gray ponytail, excess facial hair, Harley Davidson wife beater, and tattoos; woman with excess eyeliner, Harley clothes, Harley ring), I knew I was headed home.  I'm not kidding when I say that I heard them talking about their dog . . . named Harley.

My mama picked me up at the airport, and now I'm writing from my childhood bed (and at 3 am Georgia time).  There's even a framed picture of tiny baby Claire on the nightstand. :)

It feels good to be home, and I can't wait to see all my peeps.  Plus, my stepmom and I are going to get Brazilian blowouts tomorrow--woo hoo for shiny, frizzless locks!

But before I left California, I went to a baby shower for a very special lady.  Many of you know my dear friend Heather from her blog, A Measure Of . . . .  She was one of my first friends in grad school (I met her in my very first poetry workshop as an MFA student!), and we've never looked back--through several relationships, a few wild and mildly embarrassing stories, and trips around the world.  After a few-year stint in Patagonia, Chile, I finally have Heather back with me!  And now she has a husband and a baby (belly) in tow.

On Saturday we convened at The Hobnob, one of the East Bay's finest brunch establishments (my opinion might be swayed due to their $8 bottomless mimosas).  It was so wonderful to see Heather again (although harder to hug her now!) and to finally meet Serkan!  He's just as sweet and adorable as she'd described.

soon-to-be-parents, Serkan & Heather

And because I was so thrilled to be hanging out with Heather again, I didn't even mind that I was the only single person at the table, and the only woman drinking (I had four mimosas)!  Cheers to that, right?

Heather, Heather's belly, and me

She's a pretty damn cute pregnant lady.  She's all belly and she carries it so elegantly!  I cannot wait to meet lil man Yalin.  There's no doubt he's gonna be a stunner, what with his lovely & peaceful parents.  Move to Oakland, Heather!  You'll pretty much have an on-call auntie-sitter! :)

Friends don't let friends drink alone

When my friend Annie called asking if I wanted to head up to Napa with her yesterday to pick up her bi-monthly shipment at Domaine Carneros, you better believe I was all over that!

(I mean, let's be honest . . . pretty much any excuse to spend the day in Napa is good enough for me.  Dentist appointment, day-long meeting, funeral?  Sure, let's go taste some bubbly!).  I am so lucky to live just 40 minutes away from one of the most beautiful wine countries in the world.  And even though I can't afford to become a member at all of them (like I wish I could) and get shipments of new, surprising, incredible wine several times a year . . . I still love going up and tasting at some of my favorite spots as often as I can!

We started the day off right (with lattes) and then continued it right (with girl talk) on the way up to the winery.  Domaine Carneros looks like an old castle or something, and it sits atop this magnificent hill overlooking rows and rows of grapes.  We each got the sparkling tasting, and they were all so good, I couldn't even decide which was my favorite!

post bubbly flight & feelin' good

After purchasing the best truffle I've ever had in their store (orange mimosa . . . See's Candies, get with the program!), we popped across the street to the chic winery Cuvaison, where we were met with a knowledgeable sommelier (who blogs about wine here) who served us up a very fine (and slightly random) tasting menu.  I came *this close* to caving and buying a membership, but ultimately figured that buying myself expensive gifts right before Christmas was probably an unwise plan.

Our wine guy doubled as a photographer:

at Cuvaison!

After Cuvaison, we figured it would be self-destructive to taste any more wine without a meal, so we drove to downtown Napa and had some food (and another glass of wine) at one of my favorite spots, The Bounty Hunter (which I blogged about in April here).  They have a very impressive wine wall . . .

I'll take one of each!

Annie had some ribs and I had a roasted vegetable sandwich and we both had a blast! ;)  We figured we should call it a day after our third stop, and so we finished the day off right (with another latte) and headed home where, continuing the day's tradition of deliciousness, I proceeded to bake Andes mint chip cookies.

Love it!  Anytime anyone wants to spend the day up in Napa Valley, I'm your girl.  And now I'm off to watch my Saints smash on the Bengals!  Happy Sunday :)

Too much Napa + concrete floor = busted grill!

Lordy.  So, bright and early Saturday morning, Anna and I drove up to Napa to meet my daddy, who was in town for the annual culinary conference at the CIA in St. Helena.

I couldn't quite capture the CIA in all its glory--it is such a gorgeous building!

We stopped at the conference and picked up Daddy, then drove to the house he and his colleagues were staying in . . . I don't think I can adequately describe its splendor, so here are some pictures of our weekend crib (owned by San Francisco fashion designer Rebecca Beeson):

lounge area/formal dining room

pool & hot tub--see the stone hot tub at the far end of the pool?

chicken coop where you could fetch fresh eggs every morning

looking out from the back patio the morning we left

I'm clearly not kidding when I say that this place was palatial.  It was 5600 square feet, complete with every luxurious amenity you can think of, pomegranate & Meyer lemon trees, a garden from which we picked vegetables, spans and spans of land, and a sprawling industrial kitchen overlooking the exquisite wine country landscape.  Unreal.

Daddy fed me an heirloom tomato sandwich and some choice Gewurztraminer before we headed out to some wineries.  He kindly served as our guide and chauffeur.  First stop (after Cakebread, where they were kinda snobby and told us we needed an appointment) was Sequoia Grove, where they totally hooked us up with some fancy reserve wine:

Daddy and me outside Sequoia Grove winery

After which we continued onto Provenance, where dad slept in the car while Anna and I went into the tasting room!  We were just tipsy enough to buy a bottle of expensive Merlot before heading out and back to the house, where we poured some of our newly bought wine and got into the hot tub.

Somehow, between not eating much all day (no dinner is always my downfall), drinking a few too many pours of vino, and dehydrating ourselves by lounging in the hot tub, things took a turn for the crazier (by this point, my dear daddy was long asleep, leaving Anna, his two colleagues, and me to our mischief).  My share of the shenanigans was perhaps the greatest, because I ended up tripping and falling onto the majestic concrete of our palace and busted up my grill!

not good, y'all

But thanks to my lovely & talented dentist, Dr. Ann Donnelly, DDS, my smile was officially back to normal as of today at noon:

would you believe she did it on my lunch break so I didn't even have to get a sub??

But it was totally worth the chipped tooth and punchout lip, cause I've never seen anything like this place in my life.  The wineries were delightful, the weather was perfect, and we even stopped at the BCBG outlet on our way home, where I bought a darling winter sweater.

Now, returning home to a flooded apartment was a different story.  YIKES.  At least the Saints crushed the Panthers yesterday (like there was any doubt)!  Hope your weekends were just as fantastic as mine!

New Orleans: Yesterday and Today

This isn't some cheesy Katrina post; I literally mean yesterday and today.  I'm only here for a few days, so I'm trying to make the most of my time (which includes a lot of lunches & dinners surrounding the Zeitoun event I am here for).  Yesterday, I got back from Morgan City a little after noon.  I checked into my hotel and hopped straight on the streetcar and headed up to Maple St., where we used to hang out all the time in college.  First stop, Fresco--a restaurant where my bestie used to work (and which has a legendary spicy tomato dip).  Second stop, PJ's coffee, proudly displaying this on their door:

brew dat!

I also moseyed on down to the Maple St. Bookstore, where I picked up the latest copy of the New Orleans Review and some Eracism bumper stickers.  NOSTALGIA at its finest.

Then it was time to meet some folks for dinner at Lebanon's--the local restaurant my peeps and I patronized probably twice a week for four years in college.  I can now personally testify that after ten years, they still have the best hummus I've ever had in my life.

And then I broke my no-Bourbon-St. rule and headed down to the French Quarter.  I was by myself, so I figured it would be wiser to stay in the more populated parts of the city, so I wandered around Decatur St., Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral:

stopped at Cafe Du Monde for some beignets:

headed over to Bourbon St. where I made friends with some girls in New Orleans for a work conference (we discussed love, sex, and religion) and had (3) infamous hand grenades at:

saw a bunch of typical New Orleans signs such as:

and:

And that was enough of that.  I grabbed a cab uptown and called it a night.  But then this morning, I was right back at it.  We had an early luncheon this morning with the event organizers and speakers (as well as some students from the law school and school of social work), which was nice.  After the luncheon, I went to a very special place:

The Tulane English Department!  It was amazing to see so many of the same people in the building where I spent the majority of my undergrad years.  I then took the streetcar to another very special place:

The Columns Hotel . . . possibly my favorite place in New Orleans.  If I fantasized about getting married, I'd fantasize about getting married here.  There's no place I love to sit outside and sip a martini more . . . it's so quintessential New Orleans, and so reminds me of my time here.  This was my view from the big old southern porch today, looking out onto St. Charles Avenue.

And now, I'm scrambling to get dressed for our big event tonight--wish me luck, as the room is set for 270 people.  YIKES!

All-work-no-play

Y'all are gonna witness a very disciplined Claire this weekend.

(Or rather, not witness, since I will hopefully be absent from the blog world).  As much as I'd love to spend the weekend playing around with my cronies, drinking outside in the sunshine, and taking a little beach trip, 'tis not gonna happen.  I'm gonna have my weary head in the books all weekend working on these two things:

1. Voice of Witness writing

You may remember the interviews I did in the South this summer.  I met with four amazing women who had recently been released from prison (and who were brave enough to share their stories with me).  Well, as you can imagine, those recorded interviews had to be transcribed into documents, and now they have to be whipped up into first person narratives.  Tonight is slated for continuing to immerse myself the writing styles of past Voice of Witness books, and tomorrow is all about putting pen to paper (i.e. fingertips to keyboard).  Suffice to say that Sunday I'll be taking a break for football!

2. Campaigning against this.

I don't talk about politics very often on my blog, because frankly, I hate arguing.  But fighting against the death penalty is in my blood--it's in my heart--and it's a big part of who I am.  (If the state doesn't stop the planned execution of Albert Brown, I will do a longer post on this next Tuesday, before heading to San Quentin for an evening vigil).

That said, it's Friday!  And today, my Friday loves are New Orleans themed:

1. Abita Purple Haze

my Whole Foods shopping cart

New Orleans-brewed Abita beer is hard to come by in San Francisco . . . which was why I was overjoyed when Summer told me I could find it at Whole Foods!  Needless to say, I picked up two 6-packs this week, and will be happily sipping away while watching the Saints/Falcons game on Sunday morning (big game for me: I grew up in Georgia, then moved to New Orleans at 18).  Have you had Purple Haze raspberry wheat beer??  If not, get yourself to a Whole Foods, stat.

2. Drew Brees

hi, I'm Drew Brees, and I'm sweet and precious and an amazing quarterback who's gonna lead the Saints in beating the Falcons this week

is well on her way to makin' a baby!  Fingers & toes crossed, prayers sent up, chants repeated!

Happy Friday everyone--hope your weekends involve more fun than mine will!

p.p.s. Make the black bean chili I posted yesterday!

The Downward Spiral

We look innocent:

Meagan

Claire

But don't be fooled.

Yesterday, as we were deciding where to go to brunch, Meagan spoke these legendary words:

"I don't care where we go as long as they have champagne."

So we started at La Note, a classy little French cafe in downtown Berkeley, and sat in a window seat over brunch and mimosas (we ordered a bottle).

After we left La Note, we decided to walk down the street to Jupiter. After all, nothing wrong with sitting outside at a brewery on a beautiful summer sunshiney day, right?

Three or four beers (each) later, we figured it was time to go home. But all that changed when we walked past Beckett's Irish Pub on our way down the street (don't worry; we walked to La Note, so neither of us was driving).

And that's where the magic began to happen . . . and then was immediately truncated when I picked a fight with a guy who worked there and got us kicked out of the bar. What a scrappy drunk I am.

But that didn't stop us! We then took a bus (not sure how we ended up on the right bus) back to my house, where Meagan proceeded to drink sweet tea vodka, while I decided it was a perfect time to pop open a bottle of wine. At which point my phone rang--it was a good friend of the family's who was in town on business. Come on over!

Needless to say, Ciaran arrived to two very sloppy girls. But he claims he still had fun.

And that, my friends, is the reason for my latest break from booze. Tomorrow I will be drinking wheatgrass shots and eating raw vegetables.
